There's a special kind of tired that comes from walking into a store, finding the plus section is two racks by the fitting rooms, and leaving with nothing. The good news is that plenty of stores now make clothes for fat bodies on purpose, and a handful carry sizes well past 4X and 5XL.
We compared the stores worth your time by size range, whether you can try things on in person, and what changed in 2026, including Torrid's store closures and DXL's stalled merger. Size ranges come from each store's own site or filings when we checked in October 2026 unless we say otherwise, and they vary by style, so check the chart on the item you want.

Best plus-size stores for women
Lane Bryant: best for trying on in person
Lane Bryant is still the biggest plus-only chain you can walk into. Its February 2026 press release lists sizes 10 to 40 and more than 380 U.S. stores, with Cacique bras and underwear in the same shops. Find your size in person, then reorder online. Its Genius Fit jeans run 12 to 38/40.
Torrid: best for trend-led clothes and bras
Torrid's company filings now describe it as specializing in sizes 8 to 30. Torrid uses its own numbered size tags, so check the chart once and remember your number. It's also closing stores fast: 457 stores at the start of August 2026, down from 575 a year earlier. Call ahead before driving to one.
Universal Standard: widest size range
Universal Standard sells its whole line in sizes 00 to 40, so you're never shopping a "plus" afterthought of a straight-size style. It's an essentials-first brand (denim, knits, workwear) at the pricier end of this list.
Eloquii: best for work and going-out clothes
Eloquii runs 14 to 32 and leans fashion-forward: suiting, going-out dresses and seasonal trends. FullBeauty Brands bought it from Walmart in 2023.
Woman Within and the FullBeauty family: best above 5X
Woman Within lists sizes 12W to 44W, and a few basics in our guides go to 7X. It's the comfortable-casual workhorse: knit pants, tees, jeans and outerwear, often with petite and tall lengths.
Woman Within belongs to FullBeauty Brands, which also owns several stores in this guide:
- Roaman's and Jessica London: dressier styles, sized into the 40s.
- Avenue: sizes 14 to 36.
- Catherines: now online-only.
- Swimsuits For All: swimwear, listing sizes 4 to 44.
- KingSize: men's big and tall.

Woman Within and KingSize also sell many items through Amazon, which is handy if you'd rather keep one cart.
Ashley Stewart: best for bold prints and city stores
Ashley Stewart lists sizes 10 to 36 and has stores, mostly in cities. It's the place for color, prints and occasion wear. Its tall line runs to 34/36 with inseams up to 36 inches, according to Wardrobe Oxygen's 2026 tall guide.
Best big and tall stores for men
DXL: best for trying on in person
DXL is the biggest big and tall chain. It had 293 DXL and Casual Male XL stores and outlets on August 1, 2026. Big sizes start at XL and tall sizes at LT, and Rolling Stone's DXL roundup lists big sizes up to 8XL and waists from 38 to 70. Individual stores stock less than the website, so check dxl.com for the biggest sizes.
DXL agreed in December 2025 to merge with FullBeauty Brands, but its board now recommends against the deal. Nothing changes for shoppers yet.
KingSize: biggest men's sizes
KingSize calls itself the big and tall experts, with sizes L to 10XL. Its site mentions waists up to 72 inches and inseams up to 38 inches, plus extra-wide shoes. Duluth Trading: best workwear
Duluth Trading's big and tall line is cut differently, not just scaled up. Big sizes add width through the chest and midsection, and tall sizes add length. Check the chart for the top size in each style.
Best budget options
- Old Navy. In 2022 it pulled extended sizes from many stores but kept women's sizes 0 to 30 online. Order online rather than counting on the rack.
- Walmart. Its Terra & Sky plus line runs 0X to 5X, so you'll find cheap tees, leggings and sweatshirts in many stores.
- Amazon. This is the biggest one-cart option: Woman Within, KingSize, Just My Size, Levi's Big & Tall, Lee and Wrangler all sell there. Browse plus-size women's clothing or big and tall men's clothing, and look for "FREE Returns" on the listing if you plan to order two sizes.
Specialty stores worth bookmarking
- Superfit Hero designs and fit-tests its activewear only for sizes L to 7X. Think compression leggings with full-size pockets and high-impact sports bras.
- Girlfriend Collective makes leggings, bras and shorts in XXS to 6XL from recycled materials. More in our plus-size activewear guide.
- Hitchcock Shoes sells only wide shoes for men and women, up to "ultra wide." The Boston Globe described its range as EEE to 6E. Our extra-wide shoes guide covers more options.
How to shop plus-size and big and tall stores online
- Measure once, then compare charts. Write down your bust or chest, waist, hips and inseam. Sizes don't line up across stores, so the same 3X or 4XL can fit very differently from one brand to the next.
- Learn the two scales. Women's plus sizes run either by number (14W–44W) or by X (1X–6X). Men's big sizes add width, and tall sizes (LT, 2XLT and up) add length.
- Save your size per brand. Sister brands often share fit. Woman Within, Roaman's and Jessica London are all FullBeauty brands, for example.
- Order two sizes when returns are free, then send one back.
- Check the item, not just the store. A store's top size is usually only offered in its core basics.
