Moving your body should feel good, whether that's water aerobics, lifting, walking the dog or dancing in the kitchen. What it shouldn't feel like is a bra digging into your ribs, leggings sliding down every three steps, or shorts that turn your thighs raw by the second lap.

This guide covers the activewear basics in sizes that go up: sports bras with big bands and cups, leggings and bike shorts into the 5X and 6X range, men's gym shorts to 6XL, and a trainer in 6E. Specs come from each product's listing or brand page. We research rather than wear-test, so we flag what reviewers say about fit too.

Glamorise Magic Lift Medium-Impact Wireless Sport Bra 1005

1Best Sports Bra

Glamorise Magic Lift Medium-Impact Wireless Sport Bra 1005

Glamorise · $$

Key spec
bands 38–50, cups C–K
Fit
Bands 38–50; cups C, D, DD, F, G, H, I, J, K

Wire-free support for bigger cups is rare, and this one goes from C all the way to K in bands 38 to 50. Glamorise's inner crisscross sling lifts and separates, the cushioned straps adjust, and the two-way stretch back is designed not to ride up. It's medium impact, so it's right for walking, cycling, weights and classes, not long runs.

Why we like it

  • Cups run C to K
  • Inner crisscross sling for lift and separation
  • Cushioned adjustable straps
  • Moisture-wicking cups and a stretch back that resists ride-up

Keep in mind

  • Bands stop at 50
  • Medium impact, not for running

Glamorise No-Bounce Camisole Sport Bra (Wireless)

2Best for Bounce Control

Glamorise No-Bounce Camisole Sport Bra (Wireless)

Glamorise · $$

Key spec
bands 38–50, cups C–J
Fit
Bands 38–50; cups C, D, DD, F, G, H, I, J

A wireless sports bra cut like a camisole, so it covers more of the upper bust, with reinforced cups and non-stretch adjustable straps that stop the bounce stretchy straps allow. Bands run 38 to 50 and cups C to J. Mesh panels and moisture-wicking fabric help on sweaty days. It had about 2,900 reviews at 4.4 stars when we checked.

Why we like it

  • Wireless with reinforced cups
  • Non-stretch adjustable straps reduce bounce
  • Camisole cut covers more of the upper bust
  • Moisture-wicking with mesh inserts

Keep in mind

  • Bands stop at 50
  • Hook-and-eye back can be fiddly with limited shoulder mobility

Leading Lady Serena Low-Impact Wireless Active Bra 0514

3Best for Yoga and Walking

Leading Lady Serena Low-Impact Wireless Active Bra 0514

Leading Lady · $$

Key spec
bands 38–58
Fit
Bands 38–58; cups B/C/D and DD/F/G

The biggest band range in this guide, 38 to 58, in a soft cotton-spandex pullover with wide straps and a racerback. It's low impact, so think yoga, stretching, walking and lounging. The grouped cup sizes (B/C/D and DD/F/G) are less precise than a fitted bra, and pulling it over your head takes some shoulder mobility.

Why we like it

  • Bands up to 58, the widest here
  • Pullover with no hooks
  • Wide straps and racerback
  • Soft cotton-spandex

Keep in mind

  • Light support only
  • Grouped cup sizes are less precise
  • Pullover can be hard to get on with limited shoulder mobility

Why we like it

  • Sizes S–6X
  • Average 28 in, petite 26 in and tall 31 in inseams
  • Covered waistband with no drawstring

7Best Gym Shoe

New Balance Men's 608 V5 Cross Trainer

New Balance · $$$

Fit
Men's 9–18 in D, 2E, 4E and 6E (per KingSize)

A stable, flat-soled cross trainer is a better gym-floor shoe for most big bodies than a soft, narrow running shoe, and the 608v5 comes in D through 6E, sizes 9 to 18. The leather upper and ABZORB midsole are built for standing, walking and lifting. It's a workhorse, not a running shoe.

Why we like it

  • D, 2E, 4E and 6E widths
  • Sizes up to 18
  • ABZORB shock-absorbing midsole
  • Leather or suede upper

Keep in mind

How to choose a plus-size sports bra

The sports bra is the piece that decides whether you enjoy moving or count the minutes until it's over. A few things to check:

  • Band and cup sizing. Bras sold only in S/M/L/1X often don't fit well above a DD. Look for band-and-cup sizes. The Glamorise options above go to J and K cups.
  • Impact level. Low impact suits yoga and walking. Medium suits brisk walking, cycling and strength training. High impact is for running and jumping. The wireless picks in this guide are low to medium impact.
  • Straps that don't stretch. Non-stretch, adjustable straps like the No-Bounce's control bounce better than stretchy ones.
  • A band that stays put. Most of the support comes from the band. If it rides up your back, the band is too big or the straps are too tight.

For everyday wireless bras, see our wireless plus-size bras guide.

Leggings and shorts that stay up

Waistbands that roll down are one of the most common complaints about plus-size leggings. Look for wide, covered elastic waistbands, high rises that sit above the belly, and inseam options so the leggings aren't bunching at your ankles (bunching drags the waist down). Woman Within's leggings come in three inseams for exactly that reason.

For shorts, length is everything. If the hem ends where your thighs touch, the shorts will roll up and you'll chafe. The shorts in this guide have 9- and 10-inch inseams, a good starting point if your current shorts ride up. Pair them with a stick from our anti-chafe balms and powders guide for long walks or hot days, and see the anti-chafing shorts guide for more options.

Cotton vs performance fabrics

Cotton is soft, breathable and inexpensive, and it's great for low-sweat activities. Performance synthetics like polyester, nylon and spandex wick moisture away and dry quickly, which matters more the longer and harder you go. A mix works for most people: cotton leggings for yoga and errands, synthetic shorts and bras for sweaty days. Glamorise's sports bras use moisture-wicking cups and mesh panels.

Shoes, mats and the rest of the kit

A stable shoe in your real width usually feels better on knees and ankles than a fancy cushioned runner that squeezes your foot. Our extra-wide shoes guide covers widths from 4E to 6E for men and up to 4E for women. If you work out at home, a wider, thicker mat makes floor work much more comfortable. See our extra-wide yoga mats and home workout gear guide.

Activewear care

Wash workout clothes in cold water and skip the dryer when you can. Heat breaks down spandex, which is what makes waistbands loosen and leggings go saggy. Sports bras last longer if you hand wash them, and the Glamorise and Leading Lady bras here are labeled hand wash. Rotate two or three bras so each one gets a rest between workouts.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best sports bra for big breasts and a big band?

Look for a wire-free bra sized by band and cup, not just S/M/L. The Glamorise 1005 runs bands 38–50 and cups C–K, and the Glamorise No-Bounce goes to a J. If your band is above 50, the Leading Lady Serena goes to 58 but offers light support only.

Are cotton leggings OK for working out?

For walking, yoga and low-impact classes, yes. Cotton is soft and breathable. For long, sweaty workouts, a moisture-wicking synthetic dries faster and chafes less, because wet cotton gets heavy and grabby.

How do I stop my thighs chafing when I exercise?

Cover the rub zone with bike shorts or long-leg boxer briefs, and use an anti-chafe stick or powder underneath for longer sessions. Make sure shorts are long enough that the hem ends below where your thighs touch. Our anti-chafing shorts guide has more options.

Where can big men find workout shorts bigger than 4XL?

Big-and-tall specialists are the most reliable. Champion's Big & Tall jersey shorts sold through KingSize go to 6XL, and KingSize sells its own activewear in bigger sizes. On Amazon, check each listing's waist chart, since 4XL means different things to different brands.

Do I need special shoes to work out as a fat person?

You need shoes that fit your width and feel stable. A wide, flat base and a firm midsole help on the gym floor and for walking. If regular sneakers squeeze, look for 4E to 6E widths like the New Balance 608v5.
