Jeans shopping in a fat body usually goes one of two ways. The waist fits and the thighs don't, or the thighs fit and there's a gap at the back of the waistband big enough to post a letter through. Then the inner thighs wear through by spring.
We went through size charts and listings for plus-size jeans you can actually buy, mostly on Amazon, and looked at the specs that decide whether a pair works: top size, inseam options, rise, stretch content and closure. Every size range below comes from the product listing. We research; we didn't wear-test these, so we also point out where reviewers flag fit problems.

Our picks
1Best Overall
Lee Women's Plus Size Ultra Lux Comfort with Flex Motion Straight Leg Jean
Lee · $$
- Fit
- 14W–30W, in regular, petite and long
The best mix of size range and cut from a mainstream brand. The size selector runs from 14 Plus to 30 Plus, with petite and long inseams in most sizes, so shorter and taller women aren't stuck hemming or flooding. Lee eases the seat and thigh and uses a cotton/poly/spandex blend with 2% spandex, which is the formula you want if your thighs are the hard part to fit.
Why we like it
- Size selector runs 14 Plus to 30 Plus
- Petite and long inseams in most sizes
- Eased seat and thigh plus an elastic waistband
- Cotton/poly/spandex stretch denim
Keep in mind
- Not every wash comes in every size and length
- Mid-rise may sit lower than you like if you prefer a high waist

2Biggest Size Range
Woman Within Women's Plus Size Stretch Denim 5-Pocket Straight-Leg Jeans
Woman Within · $$
- Key spec
- up to 40W (42 Tall)
- Fit
- 12W–40W in average, petite and tall; 42 in tall
If 30W isn't enough, this is where to go. Woman Within's classic five-pocket straight leg is listed from 12W to 40W in average, petite and tall, plus a 42 in tall. It isn't a trendy cut, but it's one of very few zip-fly jeans on Amazon that go this far up the size chart, and it has well over a thousand reviews.
Why we like it
- Sizes 12W–40W, plus 42 Tall
- Petite (28 in) and tall (34 in) inseams
- Woman Within specializes in plus sizes
- About 1,700 reviews at 4.3 stars when we checked
Keep in mind
- Basic styling, not a trendy cut
- Many size/length combos go in and out of stock

3Best Pull-On Jeans
Woman Within Smooth Waist Pull-On Flex Fit Straight-Leg Stretch Denim Jeans
Woman Within · $$
- Key spec
- up to 40W
- Fit
- 12W–40W
Same brand, same 12W–40W range, minus the button that digs into your belly when you sit. The smooth pull-on waist and stretch denim make these the pick for long drives, desk days and anyone who just hates zippers. They look more casual than a fly front, so wear them with a tunic or untucked top.
Why we like it
- No button or zip at the belly
- Cotton/poly/spandex stretch denim
- Sizes listed 12W–40W
Keep in mind
- Pull-on waist looks more casual than a fly front
- Check the size chart; Woman Within notes some of its jean styles run large
4Best High Rise
Gloria Vanderbilt Women's Amanda Classic High Rise Tapered Jean (Plus Size)
Gloria Vanderbilt · $$
- Fit
- 14W–26W, with short and some tall lengths
The Amanda is the jean a lot of fat women already own, and the plus listing has around 29,000 reviews. It sits at the natural waist, which helps if mid-rise jeans slide down under your belly, and runs 14W–26W with short lengths in most sizes. The leg tapers toward the ankle, so skip it if you want a straight or wide hem.
Why we like it
- High rise sits at the natural waist
- Plus sizes 14W–26W, with short lengths
- Huge review base (about 29,000 on the plus listing)
- Usually affordable
Keep in mind
- Tapered leg narrows at the ankle, which not everyone likes
- Fabric blend varies by wash, so stretch varies too
5Best Mid-Rise Straight
Riders by Lee Indigo Women's Plus Size Midrise Straight Leg Jean
Riders by Lee Indigo · $$
- Fit
- 16W–26W, petite and long in many sizes
A cheaper Lee-made straight leg with petite and long inseams through about 24W and a top size of 26W. It has less stretch than the Ultra Lux (1% spandex) and is cut slimmer through the seat and thigh, so it suits apple shapes with narrower hips better than pear shapes.
Why we like it
- Petite and long inseams through 24W
- Classic five-pocket look
- Usually priced under name-brand Lee
Keep in mind
- Only 1% spandex (69% cotton, 30% polyester), so less give
- Slimmer through the seat and thigh than the Lee Ultra Lux
- Some sizes and lengths sell out by color
6Best Budget
Levi Strauss Signature Gold Women's Totally Shaping Pull-On Skinny Jeans (Standard and Plus)
Levi Strauss Signature Gold · $
- Fit
- Misses 2–28; plus chart 14W–26W
Often under $25, with a tummy panel and a pull-on waistband, and the plus chart runs 14W–26W. It's a jegging-style skinny, so it's the casual, cheap pair you wear with long tops, not the pair you wear to a meeting. Plus colors sell out, so check the size grid before you fall for a wash.
Why we like it
- Pull-on waistband, nothing to button
- Built-in tummy panel
- Often under $25
- Very large review base
Keep in mind
- Skinny leg will not suit everyone
- Plus-size colors and sizes are not always in stock
- Pull-on jegging style looks more casual than a fly-front jean
How to find your plus-size jean size
Plus-size labels are all over the place. Lee and Gloria Vanderbilt say "Plus," Woman Within uses plain numbers from 12 to 44, and Levi's uses its own waist-inch sizing for plus. A 22 in one brand can fit like a 20 or a 24 in another. So measure yourself instead of trusting your last pair:
- Waist: Measure where you actually want the waistband to sit. For a high rise that's your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. For a mid-rise it's lower, often under the belly.
- Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your seat.
- Thigh: Measure around the fullest part of one thigh. Size charts often leave this out, but it's the number that decides whether you can sit down.
Then compare all three to the chart and size for the largest one. Hemming a long leg or taking in a waist is easy. Letting out thighs isn't possible.

Stretch, rise and the back-gap problem
What fabric blend is best for plus-size jeans?
Look at the fabric line on the listing. The Lee Ultra Lux is 78% cotton, 20% polyester and 2% spandex. Riders is 69% cotton, 30% polyester and 1% spandex. That 1% difference matters: around 2% spandex gives you real stretch through the thighs, while 1% feels much closer to rigid denim. Polyester helps the fabric stand up to inner-thigh friction. All-cotton denim feels great but usually wears out fastest where the thighs rub.
High rise vs mid-rise for a belly
If mid-rise jeans keep sliding under your belly, a high rise like the Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda that sits at your natural waist will usually stay put better. If high rises press into your belly when you sit, a mid-rise with a stretch or pull-on waist, like the Woman Within Flex Fit, is the more comfortable choice. Neither one is the "right" answer. It depends on where your body is happy to hold a waistband.
Fixing the gap at the back of the waist
If you're a pear shape, you know this gap well: the jeans fit your hips and thighs, and the waistband stands away from your back. Curvier cuts and contoured waistbands help. If the gap is small, a tailor can take in the center back seam cheaply. For the opposite problem, a waist that's tight while everything else fits, a button extender buys you an inch or two. See our guide to belt and pants extenders.
How to make plus-size jeans last
Most plus-size jeans die at the inner thigh, not at the knee. A few habits stretch the lifespan a lot:
- Cut down the friction. A thin layer underneath, like slip shorts or thigh bands, means the denim rubs against fabric instead of fabric rubbing fabric through your skin. Our anti-chafing shorts and thigh bands guide covers options up to 6XL, and an anti-chafe balm helps on bare-legged days.
- Wash inside out on cold and hang to dry. Heat breaks down spandex, and that's what makes stretch jeans go baggy.
- Rotate pairs. Two pairs worn on alternate days usually outlast two pairs worn back to back.
- Patch early. A denim patch or darning over a thin spot costs a few dollars. A blown-out crotch seam usually means the jeans are done.
Should you buy plus-size jeans online?
Buying online gives you far more sizes than any store shelf, especially above 26W, where many stores stop stocking jeans. The tradeoff is fit roulette. Order two sizes if the seller has free returns, try them on in the evening when you're at your most swollen, and sit, squat and climb a stair before you cut the tags off.
Frequently asked questions
What are the biggest plus-size jeans you can buy?
Of the jeans in this guide, Woman Within's stretch straight leg goes the highest, from 12W to 40W, with a 42 in tall. Mainstream brands mostly stop between 24W and 30W. Lee's Ultra Lux plus straight leg goes to 30W.
Is 18W the same as 18 Plus?
Usually they mean the same thing, women's plus sizing, but brands label it differently and cut it differently. Lee and Gloria Vanderbilt say Plus, Woman Within uses plain numbers. Go by the inch measurements on each brand's chart, not the label.
How do I stop jeans wearing through between my thighs?
Friction is what does it, so cut down the rubbing. Wear anti-chafing shorts or thigh bands under your jeans, pick denim with some polyester in the blend, wash inside out on cold and air-dry. Patch small worn spots early, before they turn into holes.
Should stretch jeans feel tight when I buy them?
Snug, not painful. Denim with spandex tends to relax a bit as you wear it, so a pair that already feels loose in the waist at the store will probably gap later. If you're between sizes on a high-stretch jean, the smaller one is often the better pick. On a low-stretch or all-cotton jean, go with the bigger one.
Are pull-on jeans the same as jeggings?
Not quite. Jeggings are usually thin, very stretchy and cut skinny. Pull-on jeans like Woman Within's Flex Fit are made from heavier stretch denim and come in straight or bootcut legs. Both skip the zip and button.
