Wide feet and fat bodies often go together, and when your feet swell by the end of the day, a shoe that fit at 9 a.m. can be torture by 5 p.m. Going up a length doesn't fix a width problem. It just gives you a shoe that's long, floppy and still too tight across the ball of your foot.
This guide covers extra-wide shoes you can actually buy, in widths from 4E to 6E for men and up to 4E for women, plus a couple of hands-free styles if bending to tie laces is a pain. Widths and sizes come from the brand or retailer pages. We research; we didn't walk in these.

Our picks
1Widest (6E)
New Balance Men's 608 V5 Cross Trainer
New Balance · $$$
- Fit
- Men's 9–18 in D, 2E, 4E and 6E (per KingSize)
The 608v5 is the shoe a lot of big guys end up in, and the reason is simple: it comes in D, 2E, 4E and a true 6E, in sizes up to 18. It's a leather cross trainer with an ABZORB shock-absorbing midsole and a firm, stable base, built for all-day standing, walking and light gym work rather than running.
Why we like it
- D, 2E, 4E and 6E widths
- Sizes up to 18
- ABZORB shock-absorbing midsole
- Leather or suede upper
Keep in mind
- Built like a classic leather trainer, not a lightweight runner
- Not every width is stocked in every size at every retailer

2Best for Orthotics
Propet Men's Stability Fly Sneaker
Propet · $$$
- Key spec
- widths to 5E
- Fit
- Men's 7–17 in B, D, E, 3E and 5E
Propet makes shoes for people who need room, and the Stability Fly comes in five widths up to XX-Wide (5E), in sizes 7 to 17. The memory foam insole comes out to fit custom orthotics. Propet says the style is approved under Medicare's therapeutic shoe benefit for people with diabetes, so ask your doctor or podiatrist if you might qualify.
Why we like it
- Widths B through 5E
- Sizes up to 17
- Removable insole for orthotics
- Propet says the style is approved under Medicare's therapeutic shoe benefit for people with diabetes
Keep in mind
- Full price is about $125
- Widest is 5E, not 6E
3Best No-Laces Walking Shoe
New Balance Men's 577 Hook and Loop Walking Shoe
New Balance · $$$
- Fit
- Men's 9–15 in D, 2E and 4E (per KingSize)
If tying laces means a balancing act, hook-and-loop straps are the fix. The 577 is a leather walking shoe with a padded collar and tongue. The retailer we checked sells it in D, 2E and 4E, sizes 9 to 15. It's not exciting to look at, but it's quick to get on and off and easy to adjust as your feet swell.
Why we like it
- Hook-and-loop straps instead of laces
- D, 2E and 4E widths
- Padded collar and tongue
- Leather upper
Keep in mind
- The retailer we checked stops at 4E and size 15
- Looks like a classic dad shoe, because it is one

4Best Hands-Free for Men
Skechers Men's Slip-ins GO WALK Flex
Skechers · $$$
- Key spec
- extra wide (4E) per retailer
- Fit
- Men's 9–16; described in wide (D) and extra wide (4E)
Skechers Slip-ins have a molded heel that lets you step in without touching the shoe, a real help if bending over is hard. The GO WALK Flex is lightweight, machine washable and has a memory foam insole. The retailer listing describes wide and extra-wide (4E) versions but its size menu only shows two widths, so confirm the width on the listing before you buy.
Why we like it
- Step-in heel, no bending or laces
- Lightweight mesh upper
- Machine washable
- Memory foam insole
Keep in mind
- The retailer's width selector and description disagree, so confirm the width on the listing
- Sizes stop at 16 at the retailer we checked

5Best for Women
Propet Women's Stability Freestyle Step-In Sneaker
Propet · $$$
- Key spec
- widths to 4E
- Fit
- Women's 6–12 in B, D, 2E and 4E
Women's wide shoes usually stop at D or 2E. This Propet hands-free sneaker goes to XX-Wide (4E) in sizes 6 to 12. A raised heel rail and two-part heel let you step in without bending or using laces, and the footbed comes out for orthotics. Propet also calls it water-repellent and slip-resistant.
Why we like it
- Women's widths up to 4E (XX-Wide)
- Step-in heel, no bending to put on
- Removable footbed for orthotics
- Water-repellent and slip-resistant per Propet
Keep in mind
- Full price is about $125
- Sizes stop at 12

6Best Budget for Women
Comfortview CV Sport Ariya Textured Knit Slip-On Sneaker
Comfortview · $$
- Key spec
- M, W and WW widths
- Fit
- Women's 7–13 in M, W and WW
Comfortview is Woman Within's wide-width shoe line, and the Ariya is a soft knit slip-on in M, W and WW widths, sizes 7 to 13, often around $40. It has less structure than the Propet, so think errands and casual days rather than long walks. The page doesn't say what WW equals in E sizing, so check the size chart.
Why we like it
- M, W and WW widths
- Sizes up to 13
- Soft textured-knit upper
- Usually around $40
Keep in mind
- Comfortview does not define WW in E sizing on the page
- Less support than a stability shoe
Shoe width chart: what the letters mean
Width labels aren't standardized, which is why shopping for wide shoes is so confusing. Here's how two of the brands in this guide label theirs.
| Label | Propet men's | Propet women's | New Balance men's (as described by KingSize) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medium | D | B | D |
| Wide | E | D | 2E |
| Extra wide | 3E (X-Wide) | 2E (X-Wide) | 4E |
| Extra-extra wide | 5E (XX-Wide) | 4E (XX-Wide) | 6E |
Sources: Propet fit guide and the New Balance 608v5 listing at KingSize. The takeaway is that "XX-Wide" from one brand and "6E" from another are not necessarily the same shoe. When you find a shoe that fits, note the brand and the exact width code.

How to measure your feet for width
- Measure late in the day, when your feet are at their biggest.
- Stand on a sheet of paper with your weight on that foot and trace around it, holding the pen straight up.
- Measure the widest part, usually across the ball of the foot, and the length from heel to longest toe.
- Compare to the brand's chart. Many brands publish width charts in inches or millimeters by size.
If a shoe store has a Brannock device (the metal foot measurer), ask for a width measurement too. Lots of people have never been measured for width.
What to look for in shoes for heavier people
- A stable base. A wide, flat outsole and a firm midsole keep the shoe from rolling under you. Very soft, tall foam can feel great at first and then feel wobbly.
- A removable insole. It gives you room for orthotics or a thicker cushioned insole, and gives a little extra volume if your feet are high as well as wide.
- Adjustable closures. Laces, straps or stretchy knit uppers adapt as your feet swell during the day.
- Hands-free entry. If bending to put shoes on is hard, step-in styles like Skechers Slip-ins and the Propet Freestyle let you skip it. A long-handled shoehorn or a sock aid helps with everything else.
- Replace on schedule. Midsoles compress faster under more weight. If your knees, hips or feet start aching in shoes that used to feel fine, the cushioning may be gone even if the upper still looks new.
Swelling, socks and diabetes
Swelling is the reason shoes that fit in the morning hurt at night. Compression socks can help with everyday swelling. Our wide-calf compression socks guide covers sizes for bigger legs. If you have diabetes, foot care matters more: check your feet daily, avoid shoes that rub, and ask your doctor about therapeutic shoes. Medicare Part B covers therapeutic shoes or inserts for people with diabetes and severe diabetes-related foot disease when their doctor certifies the need. See Medicare's page on therapeutic shoes for current rules.
Wide shoes for workouts and rain
For the gym or walking workouts, a stable cross trainer like the 608v5 is a safer bet than a soft, narrow running shoe. Our plus-size activewear guide has the rest of the outfit. For wet days, see our rain gear guide.
Frequently asked questions
What does 4E mean in shoe sizes?
It's a width. In men's shoes, D is medium, 2E is wide, 4E is extra wide and 6E is extra-extra wide. Brands label these differently, though. Propet calls its men's widths E, 3E and 5E. Women's widths run on a different scale, where D is already wide.
Are women's wide shoes the same as men's wide?
No. Women's widths are narrower at each letter. Women's B is medium and D is wide, while men's D is medium. Propet's women's XX-Wide is 4E and its men's XX-Wide is 5E. Some women with very wide feet buy men's shoes, going down about 1.5 sizes in length, since men's lasts are wider.
Should I just size up instead of buying wide shoes?
Usually not. Going up a size adds length, not much width, so your toes end up with extra room and the widest part of your foot is still squeezed. Your heel may also slip. Measure your foot's width and buy the right width at your true length.
Why do my feet hurt more at the end of the day?
Feet swell as the day goes on, especially if you stand or sit a lot. Try shoes on in the afternoon or evening, choose adjustable closures like laces, straps or stretch knit, and consider compression socks for swelling. If swelling is new, one-sided or painful, check with a doctor.
Are 6E shoes the widest you can buy?
6E is the widest on most mainstream brands, including the New Balance 608v5 here. Some orthopedic and adaptive shoe makers sell wider fittings. If 6E is still too tight, a podiatrist or pedorthist can point you to specialty or custom options.
