Why big and tall t-shirts ride up
When a shirt rides up, it's usually not that it's too small around. It's that the length runs out. Your belly takes up some of the shirt's length, so a tee that's long enough on a flat-stomached model ends up short on you. Two fixes:
- Buy longer-length styles. Boulder Creek and KingSize both sell tees cut longer than standard. Boulder Creek says about 4 inches longer.
- Buy tall if you're even close. Tall shirts add length to the body and sleeves. A slightly long shirt looks intentional. A short one shows your belly when you reach for the top shelf.
How big and tall tees are sized
Men's big sizes (2XL, 3XL, 4XL...) are based on chest measurement, and the jump between sizes varies by brand. Measure around the fullest part of your chest and belly, take the bigger number, and compare it to the chart's chest width. Many charts list the shirt's flat width, so multiply by two. A shirt that's tight across the belly but loose in the shoulders isn't a size problem, it's a cut problem. Look for "relaxed" or "big" cuts that add room through the middle.
Fabric: cotton vs blends
100% cotton is soft and breathable but shrinks and wrinkles. Cotton-poly blends hold their shape and size better and dry faster, but some people find them warmer. If you run hot, look for lightweight cotton and wash cold. Heathered colors are often blends even when solids are 100% cotton, as with the Boulder Creek and Woman Within tees, so check the fabric line for your color.
Underwear: size by waist inches
Big men's underwear charts go by waist measurement, and they skip the guesswork if you use them. Measure where your waistband sits. For big guys that's often under the belly. Hanes' big men's chart puts 5XL at 56–58 inches and 6XL at 60–62 inches. Boxer briefs with a longer leg do double duty as anti-chafe shorts under jeans. Buying from big and tall specialists
At both KingSize and Woman Within, most items we looked at showed a high "original" price and a much lower sale price. The KingSize tee we picked showed a $49.99 list price and a $29.99 sale price when we checked. Treat the sale price as the real price, and wait for a promo before you stock up. Both sell sizes most department stores don't carry, which is the main reason to shop there.
Build a basics drawer that works
A simple rotation that covers most weeks:
- Five to seven tees in neutral colors, long enough to cover your waistband.
- A full week of underwear sized by your waist, with a longer leg if you chafe.
- Two or three pairs of leggings or joggers for lounging and errands.
- A few slip shorts or thigh bands for dresses and skirts.

Big-and-tall specialists are the most reliable. KingSize sells its Shrink-Less tee from L to 10XL and Boulder Creek pocket tees to 9XL. Many mainstream brands stop well short of that, so filter by size and check each listing's chest chart.
What's the difference between big and tall sizes?
Big sizes add width through the chest and belly at a regular length. Tall sizes add body and sleeve length. If you're both, buy tall. For example, Boulder Creek's Big tee is about 36 inches long and the Tall version is about 38.
How long should a big and tall t-shirt be?
Long enough to cover your waistband when you raise your arms or sit down. Measure a shirt you like from the high point of the shoulder down to the hem. If shirts always ride up, look for longer-length styles that add around 4 inches.
How do I keep cotton t-shirts from shrinking?
Wash them in cold water and tumble dry on low, or hang them to dry. Most cotton shrinkage happens in a hot dryer. If a tee fits perfectly right out of the bag and it's 100% cotton, assume it will get a little shorter.
Is 4X the same as 4XL?
Not usually. Women's plus sizes like 4X are based on women's dress sizes. Woman Within's 4X is 34–36. Men's 4XL is based on chest measurement. Always compare the chest and length in inches on the chart.
