Underwire and a big band don't always get along. Wires poke, dig into the soft tissue at your sides, and leave red marks that last until bedtime. Plenty of fat women have given up on support entirely and just wear a stretchy bralette, then wonder why their shoulders and back hurt.

A good wireless bra can do much more than a bralette, if it's built for it. We looked for wire-free bras sold in real band-and-cup sizes with bands of 50 and up, and checked each one's size range on the retailer listing. We research; we didn't wear these, so we also note what reviewers say about fit.

Fit
Bands 38–58; cups B/C/D and DD/F/G

If your band is bigger than 56, this is one of the few wireless options that goes there: bands 38 to 58. It's a pullover with no hooks to dig in, in cotton-spandex with wide straps and a racerback. Support is light and cups are grouped (B/C/D and DD/F/G), so it's for comfort and low-impact days.

  • Pullover with no hooks
  • Wide straps and racerback
  • Soft cotton-spandex

How to measure for a plus-size bra

  1. Band: Measure snugly around your ribcage, right under your bust, keeping the tape level. Most brands round that to the nearest even number for your band size. Check the brand's chart, because some add inches.
  2. Bust: Measure loosely around the fullest part of your bust, standing straight.
  3. Cup: The difference between the two numbers in inches roughly maps to cup size (1 inch is about an A, 2 a B, and so on), but every brand's chart is a little different.

Breast shape and placement vary a lot from person to person, so treat any measurement as a starting point. If a bra fits the band but gaps or spills in the cup, adjust the cup size first.

What makes a wireless bra supportive?

Without underwire, the structure has to come from somewhere else:

  • A wide band that sits firm and level. The band does most of the lifting.
  • Side panels or higher sides that bring breast tissue forward instead of letting it spread under your arms. Playtex calls this out on the 4693.
  • Seamed or sling cups. Glamorise's Magic Lift sports bra, for example, uses an inner crisscross sling to lift and separate.
  • Wide, cushioned straps that spread the weight across your shoulders.

Front-close, back-close or pullover?

Style Best for Tradeoff
Back-close Most support, adjustable band Need to reach behind you
Front-close Limited shoulder mobility, arthritis Band usually can't be adjusted
Pullover No hooks, soft and simple Needs arm movement to get on, lighter support

If fastening any bra is hard, a front-close is often the easiest. Some people fasten a back-close bra in front, then spin it around. If you have to pull a pullover over your head, it can be tough with tight shoulders.

Bra care so they last longer

The brands here mostly say hand wash. At minimum, use a lingerie bag on gentle cycle and never put bras in the dryer, since heat breaks down the elastic that does all the supporting. Rotate at least three bras so each one gets a day to recover. When the band has stretched so much that you're on the tightest hook and it still rides up, it's time to replace it.

Under-bust comfort

Sweat and friction under the bust can cause rashes in warm weather. Cotton-lined bras breathe better, and a light dusting of powder or a balm under the bust helps. See our anti-chafe balms and powders guide. For workouts, a proper sports bra matters, so see our plus-size activewear guide for wireless sports bras up to a K cup.

Frequently asked questions

Can a wireless bra really support a G cup or bigger?

Yes, if it's designed for it. Look for band-and-cup sizing, a wide band, fuller cups with seams or slings, and wide straps. The Glamorise Magic Lift 1000 goes to a J cup without wires. A stretchy S/M/L bralette usually won't give the same lift.

What is a sister size?

Sister sizes have about the same cup volume on a different band. Going up one band size and down one cup, say 46DD to 48D, keeps the cup volume similar. It's useful when a bra style doesn't come in your exact size, but the band is what does most of the supporting, so don't go too loose.

Is a front-close bra as supportive as a back-close?

It can be, but front-close bras usually have fewer adjustment points because you can't loosen or tighten the band. They're best if you have limited shoulder mobility, arthritis or trouble reaching behind your back.

How should a plus-size wireless bra fit?

The band should sit level around your ribcage and not ride up your back, with the straps doing only a little of the work. The cups should hold all of your breast tissue without spilling over the top or sides. If the band rides up, try a smaller band and readjust the straps.

How do I keep skin under my bust from getting irritated?

Choose breathable fabrics like cotton, keep the area dry, and change bras on very hot days. An anti-chafe powder or balm under the bust helps a lot. If you get a persistent red or itchy rash in skin folds, see a doctor, since it may be fungal and need treatment.
