Chafing is the tax on hot weather, long walks and thighs that touch, which is to say most fat people's summers. It starts as friction, gets worse with sweat and heat, and turns a fun day into one where every step stings.
We compared the most popular anti-chafe balms, creams, gels and powders on format, size and what the maker says about ingredients, based on manufacturer pages and listings rather than hands-on testing. Most people end up wanting two products: a balm for friction and a powder for moisture.

Our picks

1Best Overall Balm
Body Glide Original Anti-Chafe Balm Stick
Body Glide · $
- Fit
- 0.35 oz pocket to 2.5 oz large stick
Body Glide's original stick goes on dry rather than greasy, is listed as sweat and water resistant, and comes in four sizes up to 2.5 oz, which matters when you're covering a lot of thigh. It's made without petroleum, parabens or phthalates. The brand's own warnings note it may stain some fabrics, so let it set before you dress.
Why we like it
- Four sizes, from a 0.35 oz pocket stick to a 2.5 oz stick that covers a lot of thigh
- Goes on dry, not greasy, and washes off with mild soap, per the brand
- Listed as sweat and water resistant
Keep in mind
- Body Glide's own warnings say it may stain some fabrics
- Needs reapplying on long, hot days
- Prevention only; it isn't meant for skin that's already broken
2Best for Inner Thighs
Megababe Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafe Stick
Megababe · $
Megababe built Thigh Rescue for one job: keeping inner thighs from rubbing raw under dresses and shorts. It's a swipe-on stick that's easy to reapply in a restroom. We couldn't load Megababe's site to confirm the current size and formula, so check the listing.
Why we like it
- Made for thigh chafe specifically
- Swipe-on stick, no greasy hands
Keep in mind
- Check the listing for the current stick size and ingredients
- Reapply after swimming or heavy sweating
3Best Big Stick
Squirrel's Nut Butter Anti-Chafe & Skin Repair Stick (Original)
Squirrel's Nut Butter · $
- Fit
- 0.5 oz, 1.7 oz and 2.7 oz
The 2.7 oz size of this stick is one of the largest we found, and the ingredient list is short: coconut oil, cocoa butter, beeswax and vitamin E, per the brand. It's marketed as a skin repair stick too, which helps on skin that's already a bit rough. It contains beeswax, so it isn't vegan.
Why we like it
- Four-ingredient formula, per the brand
- Comes in a 2.7 oz stick as well as 1.7 oz and 0.5 oz
- Doubles as a balm for skin that's already a bit rough
Keep in mind
- Contains beeswax, so it isn't vegan
- Oil-based balms can feel slick in heat
- Scented versions list extra ingredients; check the listing

4Best Budget Stick
Gold Bond Friction Defense Moisturizing Stick
Gold Bond · $
- Fit
- 1.75 oz
An unscented 1.75 oz stick with aloe and vitamin E that Gold Bond says soothes skin roughed up by skin-on-skin or skin-on-clothing friction. Its big advantage is availability: you can find it in most drugstores when you run out mid-trip.
Why we like it
- Unscented
- Aloe, vitamin E and zinc oxide in the ingredient list
- Easy to find in drugstores when you run out on a trip
Keep in mind
- Smaller stick than Body Glide's largest size
- Gold Bond pitches it as a moisturizing stick; reapply on sweaty days

5Best Value Cream
Chamois Butt'r Original Anti-Chafe Cream (8 oz Tube)
Chamois Butt'r · $
- Fit
- 8 oz tube (also single-use packets)
Cyclists invented it, but chafe is chafe. The 8 oz tube is far more product than any stick here, and the brand says it's non-greasy and rinses out of skin and clothes easily. It's free of parabens, phthalates, gluten and artificial fragrance, per the brand. You apply it by hand, so it's best for home rather than on the go.
Why we like it
- 8 oz tube lasts a long time if you chafe in several places
- Washes out of clothing easily, per the brand
- Single-use packets are handy for a gym bag or glovebox
Keep in mind
- A cream means using your hands, unlike a stick
- Marketed for cycling, so you'll look past the bike-shorts branding

6Best for Sensitive Folds
Monistat Care Chafing Relief Powder Gel
Monistat · $
This gel goes on like lotion and dries to a powder-like finish, giving you a moisture barrier without loose powder. Monistat says it's fragrance- and stain-free and made for intimate, delicate areas, so it's a good pick for the groin, the bikini line and under the belly.
Why we like it
- Fragrance and stain free, per Monistat
- Powder finish without a cloud of loose powder
- Monistat also recommends it after shaving
Keep in mind
- Monistat doesn't list the tube size on its page; check the listing
- Lotion-style application means using your hands

7Best Powder Spray
Gold Bond No Mess Body Powder Spray (Fresh)
Gold Bond · $
- Fit
- 7 oz
Powdering under a belly or a heavy bust is awkward when you can't see the spot. This talc-free 7 oz spray works at any angle, including upside down, per Gold Bond. It contains fragrance and isn't for broken or irritated skin, and it's flammable, so don't leave it in a hot car.
Why we like it
- Talc-free, per Gold Bond
- Sprays at any angle, so no shaking powder into hard-to-reach folds
- Less mess than loose powder
Keep in mind
- Contains fragrance
- Aerosol: flammable, and not for broken or irritated skin
- Absorbs moisture but doesn't add the glide a balm does

8Best Loose Powder
Gold Bond Comfort Body Powder (Talc-Free)
Gold Bond · $
- Fit
- 10 oz
A talc-free, cornstarch-based 10 oz powder with aloe and vitamins, and the better value if you powder folds daily. It's not medicated, so it's a gentle everyday option. Loose powder is messier than the spray; a powder puff helps.
Why we like it
- Talc-free, per Gold Bond
- Big 10 oz bottle for daily use on folds
- Not medicated, so it's a gentle everyday option
Keep in mind
- Contains fragrance
- Loose powder gets everywhere; a spray is tidier
- Powder alone won't stop thigh chafe on a long walk; pair it with a balm or shorts

9Best for Long Sits
Anti Monkey Butt Anti-Friction Powder
Anti Monkey Butt · $
A body powder with a cult following among motorcyclists and long-haul drivers, sold specifically for friction and sweat where you sit. It's an easy add for road trips and long workdays in a chair. We couldn't confirm the current formula, so check the listing for ingredients and talc status.
Why we like it
- Made for the places you sit on all day
- Inexpensive and widely sold
Keep in mind
- Check the listing for ingredients and talc status
- Loose powder is messy in a car or small bathroom
Balm, cream, gel or powder?
| Type | How it works | Best for | Our picks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balm stick | Leaves a slick, dry layer that cuts friction | Inner thighs, bra band, waistband, underarms | Body Glide, Megababe, Squirrel's Nut Butter, Gold Bond Friction Defense |
| Cream | Slick layer you apply by hand; covers large areas | Thighs and groin on long active days | Chamois Butt'r |
| Powder-gel | Goes on wet, dries to a powder finish | Groin, bikini line, under the belly | Monistat Chafing Relief Powder Gel |
| Powder | Absorbs sweat and moisture | Under the belly, under the bust, skin folds | Gold Bond No Mess spray and Comfort Body Powder, Anti Monkey Butt |
Where fat bodies chafe, and what to use
- Inner thighs: The classic. A balm stick before you dress, reapplied at lunch on hot days. On long walking days, a balm plus anti-chafing shorts or thigh bands is the most reliable combination.
- Under the belly and under the bust: Here the enemy is trapped sweat as much as friction. A powder or powder-gel keeps the fold drier. Let skin dry completely after a shower before you powder.
- Groin and bikini line: Choose something fragrance-free for sensitive skin, like Monistat's powder gel.
- Bra band, waistband and straps: A quick swipe of balm where the elastic sits stops the red lines.
- Underarms: Balm works; many people find antiperspirant alone helps by cutting sweat.
- Seat and backs of thighs: On long drives or desk days, a powder helps. A ventilated seat cushion helps too; see our road trip essentials.
How to make anti-chafe last
- Start with clean, dry skin. Balms and powders work best on dry skin; sweat underneath shortens their life.
- Apply before you dress, and give a balm a minute to set before fabric touches it.
- Reapply before it hurts. Once you feel heat or stinging, the damage has started.
- Carry a pocket size. A small stick fits a pocket, purse or cupholder.
- Change out of wet clothes. Damp fabric, especially after swimming, chafes faster. Our plus-size swimwear guide includes swim shorts that cover the thigh rub zone.
- Dress for it. Moisture-wicking fabrics and longer inseams help; see our plus-size activewear guide.
Talc-free options
If you prefer talc-free powder, Gold Bond states that both its No Mess Body Powder Spray and Comfort Body Powder are talc-free. For any other powder, check the current label, since formulas change.
Chafing or intertrigo? When to see a doctor
Ordinary chafing is irritation from rubbing. When a rash settles into a skin fold, it may be intertrigo. DermNet, the dermatology reference, describes intertrigo as a rash in skin folds such as under the arms, under the abdomen and in the groin, driven by heat, moisture and friction. It lists obesity and diabetes among the risk factors, and notes that hot, humid conditions make it more likely.
DermNet notes that a rash in a fold can become infected: bacteria can cause a foul odor, and yeast (candida) causes itchy, moist, peeling skin with small pustules. Prevention starts with washing and fully drying folds after you sweat. DermNet even suggests a hairdryer on a cool setting for under the breasts and arms. If a fold rash doesn't clear up, smells, oozes, spreads or keeps coming back, see a doctor or dermatologist. It may need an antifungal or other treatment, not just more powder.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best anti-chafe for fat thighs?
A solid balm stick applied to clean, dry inner thighs before you dress. Body Glide's original stick comes in sizes up to 2.5 oz and is listed as sweat and water resistant. On long walking days, pair a balm with anti-chafe shorts or thigh bands.
Is powder or balm better for chafing?
They solve different problems. Balms reduce friction where skin rubs skin or fabric, like inner thighs. Powders absorb moisture in folds, like under the belly or bust. Many people use a balm on their thighs and a powder in their folds.
Can I use anti-chafe balm on skin that's already chafed?
Check the label. Body Glide says its balm isn't for deep or puncture wounds, and Gold Bond says its powder spray isn't for broken or irritated skin. Some products, like Chamois Butt'r and Monistat's powder gel, say they help calm irritation. If skin is raw, oozing or infected-looking, see a doctor.
Is petroleum jelly good for chafing?
It reduces friction in a pinch, but it's greasy, can stain clothing and tends to rub off faster than a purpose-made anti-chafe stick. Most people find a balm stick less messy.
When should I see a doctor about chafing?
If a rash in a skin fold doesn't settle, smells bad, itches with moist peeling skin, has small pustules or spreads, see a doctor or dermatologist. Rashes in folds can become infected with bacteria or yeast and may need treatment.
