Bodies change from season to season, from morning to after dinner and from standing to sitting. Clothes don't. An extender is the tiny, inexpensive fix that lets a favorite pair of jeans, a bra or a dress shirt keep working when the fit is almost right.
We looked at the main types of clothing extenders and what each one is good and bad at. Many of these are generic products sold by dozens of near-identical sellers, so for those we tell you what to look for in the listing rather than pretending one brand is magic. We haven't tested them hands-on.

1Best Overall
Button-On Pants Waist Extenders (Multi-Pack, Various Brands)
Various · $
A button-on waist extender loops over your jeans button and gives the buttonhole somewhere new to land. It's the cheapest, fastest way to make snug pants wearable for a long car ride, a big dinner or a day at a desk. Look for a multi-pack with several button sizes and colors, and check how much room each one adds.
Why we like it
- No sewing; on and off in seconds
- Multi-packs usually include several button sizes and colors
- Buys you comfortable room on jeans that fit everywhere but the waist
Keep in mind
- The button can wobble or show if your top is tucked
- Check the listing for how much each extender adds
- Doesn't fit hook-and-bar closures unless the pack includes that style

2Best for Covering the Gap
Ingrid & Isabel Bellaband
Ingrid & Isabel
An extender leaves a V-shaped gap at the zipper; a stretch band covers it. Pull the Bellaband over your unbuttoned waistband and it holds your pants up and smooths the line under a fitted top. It's sold for pregnancy, but it works for anyone, so check the listing's size chart for the largest size.
Why we like it
- Covers the gap and the open zipper, unlike a button extender
- Nothing to sew or button
- Smooths the waistline under a fitted top
Keep in mind
- Maternity sizing; check the listing for the size chart and the largest size
- Adds a layer of warmth around the middle
- We couldn't load the brand's site to confirm current sizes
3Best Belt Upgrade
Big and Tall Cut-to-Fit Ratchet Belt (Various Brands)
Various
Belt extenders exist, but a belt that's simply long enough is cleaner and more comfortable. A holeless ratchet belt adjusts in small steps instead of jumping between holes, and many are sold long so you cut the strap to fit. Check the listing for the maximum waist size before you buy.
Why we like it
- Fine adjustment through the day, including after a big meal
- Cut-to-length strap means no 'XL' guessing
- No extender buckle to show
Keep in mind
- Check the listing for the maximum waist size before you buy
- Cutting the strap is permanent; measure twice
4Best for Belts That Slide Down
Perry Suspenders (Hook-On-Belt Style)
Perry Suspenders
If your belt rolls down under your belly no matter how tight you cinch it, suspenders fix the real problem. Perry's patented design hooks onto your belt instead of clipping to the pants, so you can wear the belt a notch looser and it still stays put. Check the listing for lengths if you're tall.
Why we like it
- Hooks to your belt, so there's nothing to clip onto the waistband
- Keeps a belt from rolling under a belly
- Lets you wear the belt a notch looser
Keep in mind
- Check the listing for lengths and whether a big and tall size is offered
- Needs a belt to attach to
5Best Bra Fix
Hook-and-Eye Bra Band Extenders (Multi-Pack, Various Brands)
Various · $
A bra extender clips between the hooks and eyes on your band and adds room around the ribcage. It rescues a bra that's tight on the loosest hook or digs in after a big meal. Match the hook count (2, 3 or 4) and spacing to your bra, and check the listing for colors.
Why we like it
- Inexpensive multi-packs in common colors
- Gives a favorite bra a second life after a size change
- Takes seconds to add or remove
Keep in mind
- Must match your bra's hook count (2, 3 or 4 hooks) and spacing; check the listing
- Loosening the band shifts support onto the straps
- Visible through very thin, fitted tops
6Best for Dress Shirts
Dress Shirt Collar Extenders (Various Brands)
Various · $
A collar extender buttons into your top buttonhole and adds a little neck room, hidden behind a tie knot. It's the quick fix when a dress shirt fits in the body and sleeves but chokes you at the collar, which is exactly when it matters: weddings, funerals and interviews.
Why we like it
- Lets a shirt that fits in the body and sleeves work at the collar
- Invisible under a tie
- Cheap insurance for weddings, funerals and interviews
Keep in mind
- Visible if you wear the collar buttoned with no tie
- Check the listing for button size and how much room it adds

How pants waist extenders work
Most are a short strip of elastic or fabric with a buttonhole at one end and a button at the other. Hook the loop over your pants button, then button the pants to the extender's button. That's it: no sewing, no damage, nothing permanent.
A few tips:
- Match the hardware. Jeans buttons come in different sizes. A multi-pack with several button sizes is the safest buy. Dress pants with a hook-and-bar closure need a hook-style extender.
- Expect a V at the zipper. The extender adds room at the top, so the zipper may not close all the way. A longer top or a belly band covers it.
- Use them where they shine: long drives, flights, big meals, bloating days, desk days and the months between sizes.
Belt extenders vs. a longer belt
You can buy extenders that add length to a belt, but they add another buckle and another thing to fail. For most big guys, the better answer is a belt that's long enough to begin with.
Measure, don't guess. Belt sizing isn't consistent between brands. Many sizing charts start from your pant waist and add a couple of inches, but the most reliable measurement is a belt that already fits: lay it flat and measure from where the leather folds at the buckle to the hole you use most.
Ratchet belts have a track on the back instead of holes, so you can adjust in small steps through the day. Many come extra-long and are cut to length at home. Measure twice before you cut.
If your belt slides under your belly, it isn't a length problem; it's a geometry problem. A belt sits on the narrowest part of your middle, and for many fat men that's below the belly. Suspenders that hook onto the belt solve it without giving up the belt look.
Bra extenders
A bra extender clips between your band's hooks and eyes and adds room around the ribcage. Two things matter:
- Match the hooks. Bras use 2, 3 or 4 rows of hooks with different spacing. Buy the matching count and check the listing's spacing.
- Know the trade-off. The band carries most of a bra's support. Loosen it and your straps carry more weight. That's fine for comfort or a short-term size change; if you're on an extender every day, get refit. Our wireless plus-size bras guide is a good place to start.
Collar extenders
A collar extender is a small loop with a button that goes through your top buttonhole and gives you a little more neck room. It hides behind a tie knot, so it's best for formal events. Worn open-collar, it shows. If you're reaching for one every week, it's time for shirts cut for your neck size.
When to stop extending and size up
Extenders are for "almost fits." If you need one every day, or the longest one in the pack, the garment is telling you something, and there's nothing wrong with listening. Our guides to big and tall jeans for men and plus-size jeans for women cover brands with stretch, real size ranges and expandable waists.
Frequently asked questions
Do pants extenders work on jeans?
Yes, on jeans and pants with a standard button closure. Check that the extender's button fits through your buttonhole and that its loop fits over your button. Pants with a hook-and-bar closure need a hook-style extender.
Can people see a pants extender?
Under an untucked top, usually not. Tucked in, the extender and the gap at the top of the zipper can show. A stretch belly band over the waistband hides both.
How much room does a waist extender add?
It depends on the product, so check the listing. Many multi-packs include several lengths or styles. If you need the longest extender every day, it's time to size up instead.
Do bra extenders hurt support?
They loosen the band, and the band does most of the supporting, so you may feel more weight on the straps. They're great for comfort or a temporary size change. If you need one all the time, a bra fitting in your current band size will feel better.
Are belly bands just for pregnancy?
No. A stretch belly band works for anyone who wants to wear pants unbuttoned without them sliding down, or who wants to smooth the gap a waist extender leaves.
