Rain jackets for bigger bodies tend to fail in the same ways. The zipper won't close over your belly, the hem stops at your waist so your backside soaks through, or the sleeves pull up every time you reach for the car door. Many outdoor brands also stop around 2X or 3XL, which leaves a lot of people buying ponchos.
We looked for rain jackets and raincoats with real extended size ranges: women's plus to 7X and big men's to 10XL, from retailers that specialize in bigger sizes. Sizes, lengths and water claims come straight from each product page. We research; we didn't stand in the rain in these.

An honest note on waterproofing
None of these jackets is sold as fully waterproof. They're all labeled water-resistant, including the PU-coated slickers. In real life, that means they'll keep you dry walking from the parking lot or waiting for the bus, but a long hike in a downpour will eventually soak through, especially at the seams.
If you need storm-level protection, look for three things on any listing: the word waterproof (not just water-resistant), sealed or taped seams, and a hood with a brim that sits over your face. Then check the size chart before you get attached, because many technical outdoor brands stop at 3X or 3XL.
How to get the fit right
Measure your chest and belly
Rain jackets are sized by chest, but for many fat people the belly is the bigger number. Measure both and size for whichever is larger. Then check that the zipper will close while you're sitting, which is when a jacket is tightest across the middle.
Length is half the battle
A jacket that stops at your waist sends rain straight down onto your pants and backside. Look for 32 inches or more. The Woman Within 3-in-1 is 38 inches and the KingSize trench is 36 to 38. If you're tall, choose Tall sizes. KingSize's Tall slicker adds about 2 inches.
Sleeves and reach
Reach forward like you're opening a car door. If the cuffs pull up past your wrists, size up or buy Tall. Adjustable cuffs, like the strap cuffs on the KingSize slicker and the snap cuffs on the ellos raincoat, seal out rain and stop water running down your arms.
Two-way zippers
A two-way zipper, or a double zipper like the ellos raincoat has, lets you unzip from the bottom when you sit or drive, so the jacket doesn't bunch up over your belly.
Layering for cold, wet weather
Fleece-lined slickers are warm enough for cool rain on their own. For colder days, a zip-out or removable liner, like the Taslon Anorak or the 3-in-1, gives you one jacket for three seasons. If you plan to layer over a thick sweater or hoodie, make sure the jacket is cut relaxed or go up a size.
Care
Most of the Woman Within jackets here are machine washable. The KingSize slicker says dry clean only, so check the label before washing. Close all zippers and hook-and-loop tabs before washing so they don't snag the fabric, and follow the care label on drying.
Don't forget your feet
Wet feet ruin a rainy day faster than a wet jacket. Water-resistant, wide-width shoes help. Our extra-wide shoes guide includes a Propet sneaker that's water-repellent. Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between water-resistant and waterproof?
Water-resistant fabric sheds light rain for a while but will eventually soak through in heavy or long rain. Waterproof fabric blocks water completely, and a truly waterproof jacket also has sealed or taped seams. Everything in this guide is labeled water-resistant, so pair it with an umbrella for downpours.
How long should a rain jacket be for a big body?
Long enough to cover your seat. The jackets in this guide run 32 to 38 inches, and longer is better if you're tall or walk a lot in the rain. Short jackets let water run straight off the hem onto your pants. Check the length in inches on the listing, not just the size.
Should I size up a rain jacket to wear it over layers?
If you'll wear it over a sweater or hoodie, and the jacket isn't described as relaxed, sizing up one is usually right. Most of the picks here are described as a relaxed fit. Check that the zipper closes comfortably over your belly when you're sitting, not just standing.
Where can I find rain jackets bigger than 6X or 6XL?
Big-and-tall and plus-size specialists. KingSize's fleece-lined slicker goes to 10XL and its trench to 8XL. Woman Within's slicker goes to 7X. Many outdoor brands stop at 3X or 3XL, so specialists are usually the better bet past that.
Is a poncho a good option for fat people?
It can be. A large poncho fits over almost any body and pack, and it's cheap. But ponchos flap in wind, leave your arms exposed and can be awkward to walk in. A fitted rain jacket is better day to day. Keep a poncho in the car for theme parks and outdoor events.
