Zero gravity chairs are a joy: you lean back, your feet rise above your heart and the whole chair locks into a float. The standard ones, though, are often rated around 300 lb and squeeze you between the armrests like a hot dog in a narrow bun.
The good news is that a whole category of 33-inch XXL zero-gravity chairs now lists 500 lb ratings. We compared their published seat widths, frames and recline ranges, and added a few upright patio chairs for people who prefer to sit up. Specs come from the brands and listings; we have not tested these ourselves.

For sitting up by the fire pit, the King Kong's 800 lb rating and 24 x 20 inch seat are hard to beat, and it folds into a bag between uses. It sits at a 19-inch height, so standing up is easier than from a low lounger.

- Cup holders, side pockets and a backpack-strap carry bag
Keep in mind

What 33 inches really means
Almost every XXL zero-gravity chair advertises 33 inches, and almost every one of them is talking about the outside of the frame. The number that decides comfort is the seat width between the side rails. Here is what the listings publish:
| Chair | Rated capacity | Seat width (published) | Recline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timber Ridge XXL | 500 lb | 28.5 in | Locking, adjustable headrest |
| UDPATIO XXL | 500 lb | 29 in | 0–170°, cushioned |
| HOMSHADE XXL | 500 lb | 33 in (likely frame) | 0–170° |
| Timber Ridge XXL pair | 500 lb each | Check listing | Locking |
| Guide Gear XXL rocker | 600 lb | 25 in | Rocks, no recline |
| ALPS King Kong | 800 lb | 24 in | Upright |
For comparison, Caravan Sports' popular Infinity Oversized zero gravity chair is listed at 330 to 350 lb depending on the listing, which is why it did not make our cut.
Capacity math for loungers
A zero-gravity chair spreads your weight along a long sling, which is comfortable, but it also puts leverage on the locking mechanism and the pivot points. When you lean back to recline, those joints carry more than a straight-up seat would. Two habits matter more than anything:
- Sit first, then recline. Lower yourself into the chair while it is upright and locked.
- Unlock and come upright before standing. Pushing up from a reclined position loads one end of the frame.
We suggest choosing a chair rated at least 20 to 25 percent above your weight. If you weigh about 400 lb or more, the 500 lb loungers are at the edge of their comfort zone, and a high-capacity upright chair like the ALPS King Kong or the Guide Gear rocker gives you more margin.
Sling vs. cushion
- Sling (mesh or Textilene): dries quickly, breathes on hot days and does not trap sweat. Most of the 500 lb chairs here use a sling seat.
- Cushioned: softer on the back and shoulders, but cushions soak up rain and hold heat. UDPATIO's is removable, so you can bring it inside.
Ground and placement
Set loungers on a flat, hard surface like a deck or patio pavers. On grass, the rear legs can sink as you recline, which shifts more weight backward. If you must use one on soft ground, a pair of boards under the feet helps.
A quick check at the start of each season
Heavy-duty loungers last longer when you give them two minutes each spring:
- Test the locks. Recline and lock the chair empty, then press on the backrest by hand. If it slips, tighten or replace the lock knobs before anyone sits in it.
- Look at the laces. Stretched or frayed cords make the seat sag toward the frame. Replace them in pairs so both sides pull evenly.
- Check the feet. Missing rubber caps let bare tubing scratch decks and sink into grass.
- Wipe the pivots. Grit in the pivot points makes the recline jerky, which is uncomfortable and puts extra stress on the frame.
Storage
Two folded XXL chairs take up real garage space. Check the folded depth in the listing before ordering a pair, and hang them on wall hooks to keep the fabric off damp floors.

Frequently asked questions
What is the weight limit on a regular zero gravity chair?
Many standard zero gravity chairs are rated around 300 lb. Caravan Sports, for example, lists its regular Infinity Zero Gravity Chair at 300 lb and its Oversized version at 330 to 350 lb, depending on the listing. XXL 33-inch models in this guide list 500 lb.
How wide is an XXL zero gravity chair seat?
The 33-inch number is usually overall frame width. Published seat widths for the chairs here are 28.5 inches (Timber Ridge XXL) and 29 inches (UDPATIO). Measure across your hips while seated and add 2 inches.
How do I get out of a zero gravity chair without tipping it?
Unlock and bring the chair fully upright before standing, keep your feet flat and centered, and push up using both armrests evenly. Don't stand up from a reclined position or lean hard on one arm.
Do zero gravity chairs stretch or sag over time?
Most use elastic cords or laces to hold the sling seat to the frame, and those can stretch with heavy use and sun. Replacement laces are inexpensive and easy to find, so a saggy seat does not mean the whole chair is done.
