Nothing ends a campfire faster than the sound of a cheap folding chair giving up. Plenty of ordinary folding chairs top out around 300 lb (Caravan's standard folding suspension chair, for example, is listed at 300 lb), and even when they hold, the narrow sling squeezes your hips and the armrests leave marks.

We compared camp chairs that publish ratings of 500 lb or more and looked at the specs that matter for a bigger body: weight capacity, seat width, seat height and how much the chair weighs to carry. Ratings come from manufacturers and retail listings; we do not claim hands-on testing, and when a number is seller-rated only, we flag it.

Our picks

1Best Overall

ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair

ALPS Mountaineering · $$

Fit
24 in seat width

The King Kong earns the top spot on specs alone: ALPS lists an 800 lb capacity on a powder-coated steel frame with a 24-inch-wide, 20-inch-deep seat at 19 inches high. It packs into a backpack-strap bag. At about 13 lb and 40 inches long folded, it is a car-camping chair, not a hiking one.

Why we like it

  • 800 lb rating
  • 24 in wide by 20 in deep seat at a 19 in height
  • Cup holders, side pockets and a backpack-strap carry bag

Keep in mind

  • About 13 lb and 40 in long folded, so it is for car camping
  • Seat is roomy but not huge; the 38 in figure is overall width including arms

2Widest Seat

Timber Ridge XXL Oversized Directors Chair with Side Table

Timber Ridge · $$

Fit
28.4 in seat width

This director-style chair lists a 28.4-inch seat, a 600 lb rating and a fold-out side table. The firmer, flatter seat sits higher than a sling quad chair, which makes it noticeably easier to get up from if your knees or back complain. The trade-off is weight: about 22 lb.

Why we like it

  • 600 lb rating
  • 28.4 in wide seat
  • Fold-out side table and detachable side pocket

Keep in mind

  • About 22 lb, heavy to carry far
  • Bulkier to pack than a quad chair

3Best Padded

SUNNYFEEL XXL Oversized Padded Camping Chair

SUNNYFEEL · $$

Fit
27 in wide

If you want something closer to a couch, the SUNNYFEEL XXL is fully padded, about 27 inches wide and roughly 10 lb, with a seller-stated 800 lb limit. That 800 lb figure is the seller's own rating, so we put it behind ALPS for confidence, but it is a comfortable, cushier option.

Why we like it

  • Padded seat and back
  • Seller lists an 800 lb limit at about 10 lb
  • Armrest cup holder and pocket

Keep in mind

  • Seller-rated with no independent test data
  • The 27 in figure may be overall width rather than seat width

4Lightest 600 lb Chair

Coleman Big-N-Tall Quad Camping Chair

Coleman · $$

Coleman's Big-N-Tall quad chair is rated to 600 lb on a steel frame and weighs roughly 10 to 11 lb depending on the listing. It is easy to find, easy to replace and light enough to carry from the car to the sidelines. The listing we saw does not publish a seat width.

Why we like it

  • 600 lb rating
  • About 10 to 11 lb, light for the capacity
  • Easy to find and easy to replace

Keep in mind

  • Seat width is not listed on the listing we saw
  • Basic padding compared with the plusher XXL chairs

5Best Rocker

Guide Gear XXL Oversized Rocking Camp Chair

Guide Gear · $$$

Fit
25 in seat width

A camp rocker is a small luxury that feels huge after a day outside. Guide Gear's XXL is rated to 600 lb with a 25-inch seat. Rockers fold longer and heavier than quad chairs, and the rocking feet do best on decks, patios and firm ground rather than sand.

Why we like it

  • 600 lb rating
  • 25 in seat
  • Rocks on patios, decks and firm ground

Keep in mind

  • Rocker frames are heavier and longer folded
  • Rocking feet can sink into soft ground or sand

6Best for Two

ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Loveseat

ALPS Mountaineering · $$$

The King Kong Loveseat puts two seats on one steel frame. The headline number is 800 lb, but retailers note that is 400 lb per side, so plan around the per-seat limit. The 15-inch seat height is low, which makes standing up harder than the single King Kong.

Why we like it

  • Two seats, one frame, one bag
  • Powder-coated steel frame and 600D polyester
  • Retailers spell out the per-side limit

Keep in mind

  • 400 lb per side, less per person than the single King Kong
  • 15 in seat height is low to stand up from
  • About 16 lb and bulky

7Best Camp Lounger

Timber Ridge XXL Oversized Zero Gravity Chair (33 in)

Timber Ridge · $$$

Fit
28.5 in seat width

For lounging rather than sitting up, this 33-inch Timber Ridge zero-gravity chair lists a 28.5-inch seat and a 500 lb rating. It is bulky for a small car but excellent at a campsite you drive into.

Why we like it

  • 500 lb rating
  • 28.5 in seat width per the listing
  • Locking recline, adjustable headrest and tray

Keep in mind

  • Listing dimensions are inconsistent in places
  • Sling seat, not cushioned

How much capacity does a camp chair need?

Camp chairs live a harder life than any chair in your house. They sit on uneven ground, one leg sinks while another doesn't, and you flop into them at the end of a long day. A rating is the weight the chair handles under normal use; the moment you drop in or one leg slips into a soft spot, the load on a single joint spikes well above your body weight.

That is why we recommend at least 25 percent headroom for outdoor chairs, more than for an office chair on a flat floor:

Your weight Look for at least
Up to 320 lb 400–500 lb
320–480 lb 600 lb
480 lb and up 800 lb

Seat width vs. overall width

Camp chair listings mix up two numbers. The King Kong is about 38 inches wide overall, but ALPS lists the seat itself at 24 inches. The SUNNYFEEL's 27-inch figure may also be overall width. When you compare chairs, compare the seat width if it is published, and measure across your hips while seated plus 2 inches.

Chair Rated capacity Seat width Approx. chair weight
ALPS King Kong 800 lb 24 in 13 lb
SUNNYFEEL XXL 800 lb (seller) ~27 in (listed) 10 lb
Timber Ridge XXL Director 600 lb 28.4 in 22 lb
Coleman Big-N-Tall 600 lb Not listed 10–11 lb
Guide Gear XXL Rocker 600 lb 25 in Check listing
ALPS King Kong Loveseat 400 lb per side Check listing 16 lb

Seat height: the spec nobody talks about

Low sling chairs are cozy until you try to stand. The King Kong sits at 19 inches; the Loveseat at 15 inches. Every inch lower means more work for your knees and hips on the way up. If getting up is the hard part, a director's chair or rocker with solid armrests is worth the extra pounds in the trunk.

Steel vs. aluminum frames

The highest-rated quad chairs here (ALPS, Coleman, SUNNYFEEL) use steel frames, which take bending loads well at a low price. Aluminum saves weight; Timber Ridge, for example, sells an aluminum director's chair rated to 400 lb. For 600 lb and up, a steel frame is the safer default.

Care that keeps a heavy-duty chair going

  • Level the legs. Use a board or coasters on sand, mud or soft grass.
  • Sit down, don't drop. The rating is not a trampoline rating.
  • Check the joints. Before each trip, open the chair and look for cracked plastic hubs, bent tubes or torn stitching at the corners.
  • Dry it before storage. Mildew weakens fabric where it meets the frame.

Building the rest of your camp setup

If you mostly sit outside at home, our wide zero-gravity and patio chairs guide covers 500 lb loungers. For extra seats at gatherings and a sturdy step for getting things off the roof rack, see heavy-duty folding chairs and step stools. Heading out on a longer drive? Our road trip essentials has the rest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weight limit of a normal camping chair?

Many ordinary folding camp chairs are rated around 300 lb or less, and some do not list a rating at all. The chairs in this guide are rated 500 to 800 lb by their makers or sellers.

Is the ALPS King Kong really rated for 800 lb?

Yes, ALPS Mountaineering lists the King Kong chair at 800 lb. The King Kong Loveseat is also listed at 800 lb, but that is a total, with 400 lb per side.

How do I stop camping chair legs from sinking into sand or mud?

Put a flat board, a set of furniture coasters or a square of plywood under the legs. Spreading the load over a larger area keeps feet from punching into soft ground, which also keeps the chair from tipping.

Are director's chairs better for bigger people than quad chairs?

Often, yes. Director's chairs usually have a higher, flatter seat and solid armrests, which make sitting down and standing up easier. They are heavier and bulkier to pack, so they suit car camping.
