A recliner is where a lot of us actually live: TV, naps, reading, putting feet up after a long day. Standard recliners often feel like they were built for someone half your width, and the cheap ones tend to creak, sag or lean after a year.

We compared recliners and power lift chairs with published weight capacities and seat widths, from medical-mobility makers like Golden Technologies and Mega Motion to Amazon-native brands. Every spec below comes from the manufacturer or the retail listing; we have not tested these chairs ourselves, and where listings disagree we tell you.

Golden Technologies Comforter PR531-T28 Extra Wide Lift Chair

1Best Overall

Golden Technologies Comforter PR531-T28 Extra Wide Lift Chair

Golden Technologies · $$$$

Key spec
500 lb
Fit
28–29 in seat width

Golden is one of the big names in lift chairs, and this tall, extra-wide Comforter is rated to 500 lb with dual motors, so the back and footrest move separately. The listing gives a 29-inch seat width and 22-inch depth (the title says 28 inches), and includes in-home delivery and setup, which matters a lot for a chair this heavy.

Why we like it

  • Dual motors move back and footrest separately
  • 28 to 29 in seat width
  • Listing includes in-home delivery and setup

Keep in mind

  • Expensive
  • Tall frame is built for taller users, so check seat height

2Highest Capacity (700 lb)

Golden Technologies PR-502 Bariatric Lift Chair

Golden Technologies · $$$$

Fit
33 in seat width

The PR-502 is listed at 700 lb with a 33-inch seat and three heavy-duty motors, the highest numbers we found anywhere. It is an older listing and availability varies, so call a Golden dealer to confirm the current equivalent before you fall in love with it.

Why we like it

  • 700 lb rating per the listing
  • 33 in seat width
  • Three heavy-duty motors

Keep in mind

  • Older listing, so confirm availability and the current model with a Golden dealer
  • Very large and heavy; measure your doorways

MCombo R7777 500 lb Heavy Duty Lift Chair

3Best Value 500 lb Lift Chair

MCombo R7777 500 lb Heavy Duty Lift Chair

MCombo · $$$$

Key spec
500 lb
Fit
28 in seat width

MCombo's R7777 is the Amazon-native option with real numbers: 500 lb capacity, a 28-inch seat width, dual motors and up to 165 degrees of recline. The listing recommends it for 5'7" to 6'2" and claims tool-free assembly in about 20 minutes. At 174 lb, you will want two people for unboxing.

Why we like it

  • 28 in seat width
  • Dual motors, so back and footrest move independently
  • Listing claims tool-free assembly in about 20 minutes and a 2-year warranty

Keep in mind

  • Recommended for 5'7" to 6'2"; fit may be off outside that range
  • 174 lb chair, so plan on two people to move it

4Easiest to Sit Down Into

Mega Motion NM7001 Heavy Duty Power Lift Recliner (X-Large)

Mega Motion · $$$$

Fit
26 in seat width

This X-Large Mega Motion is listed at 500 lb with a 26-inch seat, 22-inch depth and a 19.5-inch seat-to-floor height, which is a comfortable height to lower yourself onto. The seat is narrower than the Golden and MCombo picks, so it suits people who need capacity and lift help more than extra width.

Why we like it

  • 500 lb rating
  • 19.5 in seat-to-floor height is easy to sit down onto
  • Comes from a medical-mobility maker

Keep in mind

  • 26 in seat is narrower than the 28 to 33 in options
  • Listings for this family disagree on warranty length, so confirm before buying

5Best Under 350 lb

Flash Furniture HERCULES LeatherSoft Power Lift Recliner

Flash Furniture · $$$$

Flash's HERCULES lift recliner has a 350 lb maximum and wipe-clean LeatherSoft, and it ships like regular furniture. It is a fine choice if you are comfortably under 300 lb and want lift assist; if you are near 350, buy one of the 500 lb chairs instead.

Why we like it

  • Power lift to help you stand
  • Wipe-clean LeatherSoft upholstery
  • Ships through Amazon

Keep in mind

  • 350 lb max, so skip it if you are near or over that
  • Seat width not confirmed; check the listing

How to choose a recliner or lift chair for a bigger body

Three numbers decide whether a recliner works for you: weight capacity, seat width and seat depth. Height range is a close fourth, because lift chairs are sized for a range of user heights and a chair that is too tall or too short puts pressure in the wrong places.

Chair Capacity Seat width Type
Golden PR531-T28 500 lb 28–29 in Dual-motor lift
Golden PR-502 700 lb 33 in Three-motor lift
MCombo R7777 500 lb 28 in Dual-motor lift
Mega Motion NM7001 X-Large 500 lb 26 in Lift recliner
Flash HERCULES lift recliner 350 lb Check listing Lift recliner
Flash Big & Tall recliner 350 lb Check listing Manual recliner

Golden's other widths show how much sizing matters within one model family: its PR531-M26 Comforter is also listed at 500 lb but with a 26-inch seat, while the small PR531 sizes drop to 375 lb.

Capacity math: why a recliner needs more headroom than a dining chair

A recliner rating assumes a person sitting in it normally. Recliners also get dropped into, rocked, and pushed hard on the footrest. The lift motor has to raise you and the chair together, and the mechanism carries extra leverage when the footrest is extended.

We suggest a chair rated at least 20 percent above your weight, especially for lift chairs. At 400 lb, that means a 500 lb chair; at 500 lb and up, look at bariatric models like the Golden PR-502 or check with a mobility dealer. A few habits extend the life of any recliner:

  • Close the footrest before getting up.
  • Do not sit on the extended footrest or let kids climb on it.
  • Use the lift function to stand instead of pushing up hard on the armrest ends.

Seat width vs. width between the arms

Manufacturers usually publish seat width, and some, like Golden on its PR-501 line, also list width between the arms. The between-arm number tells you how much room your hips really get. Pillow-top arms can eat a couple of inches. If you can, measure a chair you find comfortable at home and compare.

Seat depth and height

A seat that is too deep pushes on the back of your knees and makes you slouch; too shallow and your thighs are unsupported. Check that the seat depth (22 inches on the Golden PR531-T28 and the Mega Motion X-Large) lets your back reach the backrest. For seat height, your feet should rest flat when the chair is upright; the Mega Motion lists 19.5 inches from seat to floor.

Motors: one, two or three

  • Single motor: back and footrest move together. Simpler and cheaper.
  • Dual motor: back and footrest move separately, so you can raise your legs without reclining. The Golden PR531-T28 and MCombo R7777 are dual-motor.
  • Three motors: the Golden PR-502 adds a third motor; some newer chairs use one for an adjustable headrest.

Delivery, doorways and wall space

These chairs are heavy (the MCombo R7777 is listed at 174 lb) and wide. Measure your doorways and the path to the room. Lift chairs also need clearance behind and in front, so leave room before you set it in place. White-glove delivery, like the setup included with the Golden PR531-T28 listing, is worth paying for if you live alone.

Pair it with the rest of your setup

A good recliner works best alongside the right support. A wedge or body pillow can fill gaps for side sleepers who nap in the chair, and if getting out of bed is the harder part of your day, see our bed assist rails and handles.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weight limit on a regular recliner?

It varies widely and many furniture-store recliners do not publish one. If a listing does not state a capacity, assume it was not designed for heavy use. The chairs in this guide publish ratings from 350 to 700 lb.

How wide should a recliner seat be for a fat person?

Measure across your hips while seated and add 2 inches. Then compare that number to the seat width or width between the arms. Seat widths in this guide run from 26 inches (Mega Motion X-Large) to 33 inches (Golden PR-502).

What is the difference between a 2-position, 3-position and infinite-position lift chair?

A 2-position chair lifts and reclines partway. A 3-position chair adds a deeper, near-napping recline. Infinite-position chairs, usually with two motors, let the back and footrest move separately so you can stop anywhere, including nearly flat.

Will insurance pay for a lift chair?

Sometimes part of the cost may be covered when a doctor prescribes it, but rules vary by plan and usually involve a medical-equipment supplier. Ask your doctor and your insurer before you buy, and don't assume coverage.
