A car seat that's fine for a 20-minute errand can turn into numb thighs, a sore tailbone and an aching lower back two hours into a drive. When you're fat, the seat's foam is usually doing more work than it was designed for, and the edges of the cushion press into the backs of your thighs.
We compared seat and back cushions on the specs that matter for a bigger body: footprint, thickness, materials and what the maker says about heavier users, based on manufacturer pages and listings. We haven't sat on all of them. Very few cushion makers publish a weight limit, so where one doesn't, we say so.

Our picks

1Best Overall for Heavy Drivers
Purple Ultimate Seat Cushion
Purple · $$$
- Key spec
- 21.75 x 18 x 2.5 in
This is the only cushion here whose maker directly addresses bigger bodies: Purple calls the Ultimate its pick for people over 200 lb and says it's designed for car and truck seats. At 21.75 x 18 inches it has the largest footprint we found, and the 2.5-inch grid is meant to flex under pressure instead of flattening. Budget about $159, and keep it out of a baking car.
Why we like it
- Largest footprint in Purple's line at 21.75 x 18 inches
- Purple recommends it for users over 200 lb and for 8+ hour sits
- Grid design flexes instead of bottoming out like thin memory foam
Keep in mind
- 2.5 inches thick, so it eats headroom; tall drivers should check clearance
- Purple warns that heat can warp the grid; don't leave it baking in a parked car
- Pricey at about $159 on Purple's site

2Best Low-Profile Cushion
Purple Simply Seat Cushion
Purple · $$$
- Key spec
- 17.5 x 15.75 x 1.25 in
At 1.25 inches thick, the Simply is the cushion for tall drivers and low rooflines, where every inch of headroom counts. Purple pitches it for commutes and standard car seats. Its 17.5 x 15.75-inch footprint is narrow for wide hips, so think of it as a pressure-relief layer, not a seat widener.
Why we like it
- Only 1.25 inches thick, so it costs little headroom
- Light at about 4 lb, easy to move between cars
- Machine-washable cover
Keep in mind
- 17.5 x 15.75 inches is narrower than many big drivers' seats and hips
- Purple says it's best for short commutes, not all-day drives
- Heat can warp it; Purple says to store it out of direct sun
3Best Budget Memory Foam
Everlasting Comfort Memory Foam Seat Cushion (Coccyx Cutout)
Everlasting Comfort
If $100 or more for a cushion is a stretch, a memory foam cushion with a tailbone cutout is the classic budget option. The cutout takes pressure off the tailbone, which is where many heavier drivers feel it first. Check the listing's dimensions against your seat, and expect foam to compress more under a heavier body than a grid does.
Why we like it
- Coccyx cutout takes pressure off the tailbone
- Thicker padding than most economy seat bottoms
- Doubles as a car or office cushion at home
Keep in mind
- Bulky; it takes a real share of your carry-on space
- Adds sitting height, which can make the tray table feel low
- Check the listing for dimensions; it may overhang a narrow seat

4Best Lumbar Support
Purple Back Cushion (Lumbar Support)
Purple · $$$
- Key spec
- 15.75 x 9.25 x 2.5 in
A flat seatback leaves a gap behind your lower back, and on a long drive you'll feel it. Purple's back cushion is 15.75 x 9.25 x 2.5 inches with a built-in strap and buckle that Purple says fits most car seats. It moves you forward about 2.5 inches, so re-adjust your seat and wheel after you install it.
Why we like it
- Strap and buckle keep it from sliding down the seat
- Grid design stays breathable compared with solid foam
- Fits most car seats, per Purple
Keep in mind
- 2.5 inches of depth pushes you forward; shorter-legged drivers may need to re-adjust the seat
- About $79 for a lumbar pillow
- Don't strap anything over a seatback that houses a side airbag without checking your owner's manual
5Best Budget Lumbar Pillow
Everlasting Comfort Memory Foam Lumbar Support Pillow
Everlasting Comfort
A cheaper memory foam lumbar pillow with straps to hold it on the seatback. It does the same basic job as the Purple for less money. Check the listing for dimensions; a very thick pillow takes legroom and pushes you closer to the wheel.
Why we like it
- Straps keep it from sliding down the seat back
- Fills the lower-back gap on long sits
- Useful in rental cars and hotel desk chairs too
Keep in mind
- Foam doesn't pack small; an inflatable lumbar pillow saves space
- A thick pillow takes depth from an already shallow seat
- Check the listing for current dimensions
6Best for Hot Weather
12V Ventilated Cooling Car Seat Cushion (Various Brands)
Various
If your car doesn't have ventilated seats, a 12V fan cushion moves air across your back and the backs of your thighs, where a bigger body traps the most heat. Many sellers make near-identical versions, so compare the listing's width with your seat and check the plug type.
Why we like it
- Moves air where a fat body sits hottest: back and backs of thighs
- Plug-in, no installation
- Covers both seat bottom and back on most designs
Keep in mind
- Many sellers make near-identical versions; check the listing for dimensions and fan count
- Thin and narrow on some models; compare its width with your seat
- Don't wrap a seatback that houses a side airbag without checking your owner's manual

7Best Swivel Cushion for Getting In
Stander Auto Mobility Combo Pack (HandyBar + Swivel Seat Cushion)
Stander
Not a comfort cushion so much as a mobility tool: the rotating disc lets you sit sideways and pivot both legs in at once, and the bundle includes a 350 lb-listed HandyBar for getting out. Check the listing for the cushion's dimensions and limit, and treat it as an entry aid.
Why we like it
- Swivel cushion turns sit-then-swing into one smooth pivot
- Includes the 350 lb-listed HandyBar
- One purchase covers both getting in (the cushion) and getting out (the handle)
Keep in mind
- The cushion adds height, which costs headroom in low cars
- Check the listing for the cushion's dimensions and weight limit; we couldn't confirm them
- A swivel disc can be slippery; many people use it only for getting in and out

What to look for when you're a heavy driver
Footprint versus your seat. Measure the flat part of your car seat between the side bolsters. A cushion wider than that perches on the bolsters and tilts you; one much narrower leaves the edges of your thighs on the original seat. The Purple Ultimate's 21.75-inch width is generous, but in a sport seat with tall bolsters it may not lie flat.
Material. Memory foam molds to you but compresses under weight, and it's temperature-sensitive: firmer when cold, softer when warm. Grid-style gel cushions like Purple's are designed to flex rather than flatten. Thicker usually holds up better under a heavier body, at the cost of height.
Thickness and headroom. This is the trade-off nobody mentions. Front headroom in a midsize sedan is often 38 to 40 inches, while full-size GM trucks list 43.0. A 2.5-inch cushion can be an easy fit in one and a head-on-the-headliner problem in the other. Our guides to the best cars and best SUVs and trucks for big drivers list headroom for dozens of current models.
Heat. Parked cars get hot. Purple warns that heat can warp its grid and may void the warranty, and suggests storing the cushion out of direct sun, such as in the trunk or under a seat.
Grip and covers. A non-slip base or strap keeps the cushion from shifting when you brake. A washable cover is worth having on anything you sit on daily.
Safety checks before you add a cushion
- Front passenger seat: Many vehicles use a weight-sensing system in that seat to decide whether the passenger airbag is enabled. Check your owner's manual before putting a cushion or cover there.
- Side airbags: If your seatbacks contain side airbags, check the manual before strapping anything around the seatback.
- Belt fit: A thicker cushion raises you relative to the seat belt. IIHS says the lap belt should sit low on the hips or across the upper thighs, not the belly. If you need more belt length, read our car seat belt extender safety guide before buying anything.
- Wheel distance: Re-check that your chest is at least 10 inches from the steering wheel, as IIHS advises, after adding a back cushion.
- Heated and ventilated seats: A cushion blocks them, so a fan cushion may be redundant if your car already has ventilation.
Cushion, or a different seat?
A cushion can fix pressure points and a hollow lower back. It can't make a narrow seat wider or create headroom. If your hips touch both the door and the console, or your thighs hang off the front edge, the seat is the problem. Some vehicles offer an extendable seat cushion for thigh support or power lumbar adjustment, both worth looking for on a test drive. On long trips, stopping to stand and walk does as much for comfort as any cushion; our road trip essentials guide has more ideas.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best car seat cushion for a heavy person?
Based on manufacturer specs, the Purple Ultimate Seat Cushion. It's 21.75 x 18 inches, 2.5 inches thick and the cushion Purple recommends for people over 200 lb and for car and truck seats.
Do seat cushions have weight limits?
Most don't publish one. Purple gives guidance rather than a hard limit, recommending its Ultimate cushion for people over 200 lb. If a listing doesn't state a limit, assume foam will compress more under a heavier body and replace the cushion when it stays flat.
Can a seat cushion affect my airbag?
It can on the front passenger seat. Many vehicles use a weight-sensing system in that seat to decide whether the passenger airbag is on, and owner's manuals often caution against aftermarket covers or cushions there. Check your manual before using one.
Will a seat cushion make me sit too high?
Every inch of cushion is an inch less headroom and a change in your reach to the pedals. A 2.5-inch cushion is fine in a full-size truck with 43 inches of headroom but can put a tall driver's head near the roof of a sedan.
How do I keep a seat cushion from sliding?
Look for a non-slip base or a strap, and set the cushion so it sits flat and centered. Don't drive on a loose pillow that can slide out from under you when you brake.
