Wedge pillows are great for reading in bed, lounging, or sleeping with your head and chest raised. The problem for bigger bodies is width: a lot of wedges are about as wide as a bed pillow, so broad shoulders and arms slide off the sides and you end up propping yourself with three extra pillows anyway.
This guide focuses on the dimensions that matter: width, height and how much of the bed each pillow takes up. We also cover body pillows for side sleepers who want support between the knees and along the back. A quick note: a wedge is a comfort and positioning tool, not a medical treatment. If you're using one for reflux or snoring, talk to your doctor.

Our picks
1Best Overall
Kölbs Extra Wide Bed Wedge Pillow, Memory Foam Top, 7.5 Inch Height
Kölbs
- Fit
- 7.5 in height (12 in and 5 in versions also sold)
About 33 inches across, so your shoulders and arms actually stay on the incline. The 7.5-inch height is a moderate, easy place to start, and Kölbs puts a memory foam top over a firmer high-density core. The cover is removable and washable. At 33 inches wide it takes up more than half of a 60-inch queen.
Why we like it
- Roughly 33 in wide per the listing, wider than many standard wedges
- Memory foam top over a firmer high-density foam core, per the manufacturer
- Removable, machine-washable jacquard cover
- Moderate 7.5 in height is an easy starting point
Keep in mind
- Dimension labels differ between variants (one reads '33 x 313 x 7'), so check the size you're buying
- Ships compressed; one reviewer said their foam never fully expanded
- At 33 in wide it takes up more than half of a 60 in queen
2Best Tall Wedge
Kölbs Extra Wide Bed Wedge Pillow, Memory Foam Top, 12 Inch Height (31 x 33 x 12 in)
Kölbs
- Fit
- 12 in height (7.5 in and 5 in versions also sold)
The same extra-wide Kölbs at 12 inches tall (31 x 33 x 12), for people who want a steep incline or plan to sit up against it. Twelve inches is a lot of lift, so if you're unsure, start with the 7.5-inch version. Both ship compressed and need time to expand.
Why we like it
- 12 in height for a steep incline
- About 33 in wide, roomier than many standard wedges
- Memory foam top over a firmer foam core, per the manufacturer
- Removable, washable cover
Keep in mind
- A 12 in incline is too steep for many people; start lower if unsure
- Ships compressed and needs time to expand
- Takes up a big share of a queen bed

3Best for Side Sleeping on an Incline
MedCline Reflux Relief System, Wedge & Body Pillow, Large 6'0" and Taller
MedCline · $$$$
- Key spec
- 8 in wedge, 15–20° incline (Large)
- Fit
- Small (6 in wedge, 5'4" and under), Medium (7 in, 5'5"–5'11"), Large (8 in, 6'0" and taller)
A wedge, a full-length body pillow and an arm pocket that work together so you can lie on your side on a 15 to 20 degree incline without your bottom arm getting pinned. It's sized by height, and the Large (8-inch wedge) is for people 6 feet and up. It's expensive, contains natural rubber latex, and takes up about half a queen bed.
Why we like it
- Inclines the whole torso at 15–20°, per the manufacturer
- Arm pocket takes pressure off the downside shoulder and arm
- Body pillow holds you in place on the incline
- Removable, machine-washable covers; listing says most FSA/HSA plans cover it
Keep in mind
- Expensive (around $270 for the Large at time of research)
- Contains natural rubber latex
- Takes up about half a queen bed; the maker says it is not recommended for people with lower back or hip injuries

Vivalife
- Fit
- 10 in shown; other variants exist on the page but weren't confirmed
A 10-inch wedge with a gel memory foam top, sitting between the common 7.5 and 12 inch heights. That middle ground suits people who find 7 inches too subtle but 12 too steep. Width isn't confirmed on the listing, so check it against your shoulders.
Why we like it
- 10 in height sits between the common 7.5 in and 12 in options
- Gel memory foam top layer, per the listing
- Breathable, soft cover, per the listing
Keep in mind
- Width and length not confirmed; check the listing
- Foam firmness and density not published
5Best for Reading in Bed
Xtreme Comforts Wedge Pillow Headboard, 7 Inch Bed Wedge Pillow Cushion
Xtreme Comforts
- Fit
- One size (7 in height)
A moderate 7-inch memory foam wedge that the brand pitches for sitting up, reading and lounging as much as sleeping, and it flips around as a leg rest. It's about 25 inches wide per the brand's replacement-cover listing, so it's a better backrest than broad-shoulder sleep wedge.
Why we like it
- Mid-height 7 in incline, a gentle starting point
- Brand pitches it for sitting up, reading, and leg elevation, not just sleeping
- Machine-washable cover; replacement covers sold separately
Keep in mind
- About 25 in wide (per the replacement-cover listing), so not a broad-shoulder pick
- Fixed height, no adjustment
- Foam density and layer details not confirmed

6Best Straight Body Pillow
Coop Home Goods Original Adjustable Body Pillow, 20x54
Coop Home Goods · $$$
- Key spec
- 20 x 54 in
- Fit
- One size (20 x 54 in)

Why we like it
- Adjustable cross-cut memory foam and microfiber fill
- 20 x 54 in length supports shoulder to knee
- Machine-washable cover
- CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certified, per the listing
Keep in mind
- Unlike Coop's bed pillows, it doesn't include an extra fill bag

Pharmedoc U Shape Cooling Cover Pregnancy Pillow & Carrying Case
PharMeDoc

- Wraps both sides of your body, 53 x 31 x 7 in per the listing

- Cooling cover the brand describes as cool to the touch

Keep in mind

- One reviewer of a sister model said the fill went flat and clumped
How to choose a wedge pillow for a bigger body
Three numbers matter: width, height and length. Here's how the picks compare, based on manufacturer and listing specs.
| Pick | Type | Size (approx.) | Height / incline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kölbs Extra Wide | Wedge | About 33 in wide | 7.5 in |
| Kölbs Extra Wide 12 in | Wedge | 31 x 33 in | 12 in |
| Vivalife | Wedge | Check listing | 10 in |
| Xtreme Comforts | Wedge | 27 x 25 in | 7 in |
| MedCline Large | Wedge + body pillow system | About half a queen bed | 8 in wedge, 15–20° |
| Coop Home Goods | Straight body pillow | 20 x 54 in | Adjustable fill |
| PharMeDoc | U-shaped body pillow | 53 x 31 in | 7 in thick |
Width: the spec that matters most
If your shoulders are wider than the wedge, your arms and upper back hang off the sides, which twists you and defeats the point. Measure across the widest part of your shoulders, then look for a wedge a few inches wider. The Kölbs Extra Wide's roughly 33 inches is the widest we confirmed; Xtreme Comforts' replacement-cover listing puts its wedge at 27 x 25 inches.
Height: start lower than you think
Higher isn't automatically better. A steep wedge can make some people slide down during the night. A 7 to 7.5 inch wedge is a good starting point; a 10-inch wedge is a step up; 12 inches is close to sitting up and works well as a backrest. On a soft mattress, the wedge also sinks in a little, so the real incline is slightly lower than the label.
If you keep sliding down, a pillow under your knees can help hold you in place.
Wedges and reflux: what the experts say
Raising the head at night comes up often in reflux advice. The Cleveland Clinic notes that GERD symptoms can be worse at night or when lying down and includes raising your head 6 to 8 inches, with extra pillows or a foam wedge, in its treatment advice. The NIDDK gives similar guidance. We're not doctors, and a wedge isn't a cure for anything. If reflux is why you're shopping, ask your doctor what's right for you.
The MedCline system is built around side sleeping on an incline, with a 15 to 20 degree slope and an arm pocket so your downside arm doesn't go numb. Its distributor notes it isn't recommended for people with lower back or hip injuries (Performance Health).
Snoring and sleep apnea
Plenty of people like sleeping propped up when they snore. That's fine for comfort, but loud snoring can also be a sign worth mentioning to your doctor, especially with pauses in breathing or heavy daytime tiredness. A sleep study is how you find out, and if you're prescribed CPAP, follow your doctor's plan. A wedge doesn't replace it.
How to choose a body pillow
Side sleepers with bigger bodies can find that their top knee drops toward the mattress, twisting the hips and lower back. A body pillow between the knees and along your front fills that gap.
- Straight body pillows (like the Coop, 20 x 54 inches) are easy to hug and move, and take up less room. Adjustable fill lets you match the thickness to the space between your knees.
- U-shaped pillows (like the PharMeDoc, 53 x 31 inches) support your front and back at once, so you can roll over without rearranging. They take up a lot of bed, so they work best in a queen or king.
- Wedge plus body pillow systems (like MedCline) combine both for incline side sleeping.
Sizing for your bed
A queen is 60 inches wide, so two people each using a 33-inch wedge won't fit side by side. If you share a bed, either one person uses the wedge, or you look at an adjustable base that raises your side of the bed. Our mattress guide covers the mattress underneath, which matters too: a wedge on a sagging mattress just sinks into the sag.
Care tips
Foam wedges often ship compressed. Give memory foam a day or two to expand fully before judging the height. Use removable covers and wash them on the schedule on the tag, and keep a spare cover if the pillow gets daily use.
Frequently asked questions
What height wedge pillow should I get?
Start moderate. A 7 to 7.5 inch wedge is a gentle incline most people can sleep on; 10 inches is noticeably steeper; 12 inches is closer to sitting up. If you're buying for a reason your doctor has mentioned, ask them what height to aim for.
Can a wedge pillow help with sleep apnea?
A wedge isn't a treatment for sleep apnea. If you snore loudly, someone has noticed pauses in your breathing, or you're exhausted during the day, talk to your doctor about a sleep study and whether CPAP is right for you. If you already use CPAP, check with your care team before changing how you sleep.
How wide should a wedge pillow be for broad shoulders?
Measure across your shoulders and add a few inches so your arms have somewhere to rest. Standard wedges are often narrower; Xtreme Comforts' is about 25 inches, while the Kölbs Extra Wide is about 33. Remember a queen bed is 60 inches across, so a wide wedge takes up more than half.
Can I use a wedge pillow on an adjustable bed?
You can, but you may not need one: an adjustable base raises your head and upper body without a pillow. If you're shopping for a base, check that its weight rating covers you, your partner and the mattress.
Are these pillows latex-free?
Not all of them. The MedCline system contains natural rubber latex, according to its distributor listing. If you have a latex allergy, check each listing's materials before you buy.
