Most mattresses quietly assume you weigh 250 lb or less. Go over that and the comfort layers bottom out, the middle sags, and the edge you sit on to put your socks on starts to slope. Then the warranty fine print points out that body impressions under a certain depth aren't covered.

The good news is that a handful of brands now build mattresses specifically for bigger bodies, with published weight ratings, heavier coils and denser foams. We compared their official specs, trials and warranties. The best options are sold brand-direct, not on Amazon, and we couldn't confirm an Amazon-sold mattress with a comparable published heavy-sleeper rating, so every pick here links to the maker.

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Luxe Hybrid Mattress

2Best Value

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Luxe Hybrid Mattress

Brooklyn Bedding · $$$$

Brooklyn Bedding's Titan Plus line is built for plus-size sleepers, and the Luxe is its medium-feel hybrid, rated up to 1,200 lb with 8-inch TitanCore coils (up to 900 per mattress). Why we like it

  • Rated up to 1,200 lb, per Brooklyn Bedding
  • 8" TitanCore individually encased coils (up to 900) with high-density base foam
  • 365-night trial and limited lifetime warranty, per the brand

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Core Mattress

3Best Budget

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Core Mattress

Brooklyn Bedding · $$$$

Key spec
Up to 1,000 lb

The least expensive heavy-sleeper hybrid here at $1,349 list for a queen, and still rated up to 1,000 lb in Brooklyn Bedding's FAQ. It's a firm, 12-inch, four-layer hybrid on the same 8-inch TitanCore coils, best for back and stomach sleepers who want to sleep on the mattress rather than in it.

Why we like it

  • Least expensive heavy-sleeper hybrid here (queen $1,349 list, often discounted)
  • Designed to support up to 1,000 lb, per Brooklyn Bedding
  • 8" individually encased steel coils, up to 900 per mattress
  • 365-night trial and limited lifetime warranty, per the brand

Keep in mind

  • Firm feel; side sleepers may want the Luxe instead
  • Thinner comfort layers than pricier picks
  • Page shows two different weight figures (1,000 lb FAQ vs a 1,200 lb image badge)

Big Fig Firm Mattress (11.5" Hybrid, Extra Support)

4Firmest Support

Big Fig Firm Mattress (11.5" Hybrid, Extra Support)

Big Fig · $$$$

Key spec
Up to 600 lb per sleeper

Big Fig's firmest bed scores 9 on its scale and the page lists up to 600 lb per sleeper. It uses the same heavy-duty 15-gauge coil base and edge foam as the Classic with less padding on top, which suits heavier stomach and back sleepers. At 11.5 inches it's slimmer, and many side sleepers will find it too hard.

Why we like it

  • Big Fig's Firm page says up to 600 lb per sleeper
  • Heavy-duty 15-gauge pocketed coils and 80 ILD edge foam, per the manufacturer
  • Least expensive Big Fig model (queen $1,849 list, often discounted)
  • 120-night trial (free returns after a two-week minimum) and lifetime warranty, per Big Fig

Keep in mind

  • Scored 9 on Big Fig's firmness scale: likely too hard for many side sleepers
  • Page contradicts itself on capacity (1,200 vs 1,100 lb) and foam layer count
  • Thinner (11.5") than most heavy-sleeper hybrids

Saatva HD Mattress

5Best Luxury Innerspring

Saatva HD Mattress

Saatva · $$$$

Key spec
Sleepers up to 500 lb

Saatva designed the HD for sleepers up to 500 lb and rates its 5 to 7 out of 10 firmness on sleepers weighing 300 to 500 lb, which is refreshingly specific. It pairs tempered steel coils with five-zone natural latex and a 3-inch Euro pillow top. It's the priciest pick, Saatva says it needs the HD foundation, and you get a 365-night trial.

Why we like it

  • Firmness is rated specifically for sleepers 300-500 lb, per Saatva
  • Tempered steel coils Saatva says are 25% stronger than industry standard
  • 365-night home trial and lifetime 'Friends for Life' warranty, per Saatva
  • 5-zone natural latex plus 3" Euro pillow top for pressure relief

Keep in mind

7Best Medium-Firm Hybrid

Helix Plus Mattress

Helix · $$$$

Helix rates the Plus for 1,000 lb combined or 500 lb per sleeper. Taller XL wrapped coils sit under dense memory foam, and Helix describes the feel as about a 7 out of 10. It's a solid middle-of-the-road choice for couples with different sleep positions. At 11.5 inches it's thinner than most here, and Helix's pages disagree on trial length, so confirm it at checkout.

Why we like it

  • Rated for 1,000 lb combined / 500 lb per sleeper, per Helix
  • XL wrapped coils over a DuraDense foam base, with 4 lb memory foam
  • Medium-firm (Helix says 'feels like a 7') suits many side sleepers
  • 15-year limited warranty, per Helix product page

Keep in mind

  • 11.5 in profile is thinner than most competitors
  • Trial length differs across Helix pages; confirm at checkout
  • Coil gauge and count are not published

8Honorable Mention

WinkBed Plus (WinkBed Luxury Hybrid, Plus firmness)

WinkBeds · $$$$

WinkBeds says the Plus is specially designed for sleepers over 250 lb, with extra-durable foams and a reinforced coil system, and its FAQ lists a 365-night trial. What it doesn't publish is a weight limit. If you're well above 400 lb or sharing a bed, pick one of the mattresses above with a number in writing.

Why we like it

  • Specially designed for sleepers over 250 lb, per WinkBeds
  • Extra-durable foams and a reinforced coil system, per WinkBeds
  • 365-night trial (30-night minimum) with no restocking or return shipping fee, per the WinkBeds FAQ
  • Lifetime limited warranty covering indentations over 1.5 in

Keep in mind

  • No published weight capacity, only a target sleeper weight (250 lb+)
  • WinkBeds pages disagree on height (14.5 in vs 13 in) and trial length; confirm at checkout
  • Warranty requires a rigid base with ample center support legs

Why heavier bodies need a different mattress

The Sleep Foundation puts it plainly: "Most mattresses are designed for people up to 250 pounds." Heavier sleepers sink deeper, so they need more support to keep the spine aligned, and generally do better on firmer mattresses and hybrids. The same guide advises people over 230 lb to skip mattresses under 8 inches tall. Every pick here with a published height is 11.5 inches or taller.

When a brand's pages disagree with themselves (Big Fig lists both 1,100 and 1,200 lb; the Titan Elite page lists both 1,000 and 1,200 lb), we use the lower number.

Per-side vs total weight ratings: do the math

Brands word their ratings differently. Big Fig gives both a total and a per-person figure. Helix says 1,000 lb combined or 500 lb per sleeper. Saatva rates the HD per sleeper. Brooklyn Bedding gives one number without saying whether it's per side.

Here's how to check yourself:

  1. Add up everyone who sleeps in the bed, including a regular pet or kid visitor, and compare with the total rating.
  2. Check the heavier sleeper against the per-side rating. A 450 lb and a 300 lb sleeper total 750 lb, comfortably under Big Fig's 1,100 lb, and the 450 lb sleeper is also under its 550 lb per-person figure.
  3. Leave headroom. You sit on the edge, kneel to make the bed and flop down at night. A rating near your combined weight is a ceiling, not a target.

Coils, gauge and edge support

In coil gauge, a lower number means thicker wire. Big Fig calls its 15-gauge coils heavy-duty, and the Sleep Foundation describes the Saatva HD's 12.5-gauge coils as very thick. Brooklyn Bedding and Helix don't publish gauge, so compare coil height and count instead.

Edge support is the underrated spec for bigger bodies. If you sit on the side of the bed to dress or get up in stages, a soft edge feels like it's tipping you off. Big Fig uses high-density 80 ILD foam around the perimeter for exactly this. If getting up is a struggle, a bed assist rail or transfer pole helps too.

Don't void your warranty with the wrong base

This trips up a lot of people. Saatva's warranty is void if a queen or larger foundation isn't on a 5- or 6-legged frame with vertical center support, and it wants platform slats less than 4 inches apart (the HD page asks for slats at least 3 inches wide). WinkBeds requires a firm, rigid, non-flexible surface with ample center support legs. Big Fig says its mattress can't go straight on its metal frame without a foundation. Plan the frame with the mattress; our heavy-duty bed frames guide covers options rated from 1,250 lb to 10,000 lb in testing.

Read the trial fine print

  • Big Fig: 120 nights from delivery, with Big Fig asking you to try it at least two weeks. Returns are free, limited to one per model and two per household. Foundations and bases aren't returnable (Big Fig trial).
  • Brooklyn Bedding Titan: 365 nights, but you must wait 30 days after delivery to start a return, and the trial can be used once.
  • WinkBeds: 365 nights per its FAQ, at least 30 nights first, with a $49 exchange fee.
  • Saatva: 365-night home trial on the HD.

Sleeping hot?

Plenty of fat people sleep hot, and dense foam doesn't help. The Titan Plus Elite's cooling pillow top and micro-coils are the most breathable build here; Big Fig uses a ThermoGel cooling cover. Pair either with cooling sheets with deep pockets, since several of these mattresses are 13 to 14.5 inches tall.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weight limit on a regular mattress?

Most mattresses don't publish one. The Sleep Foundation says most mattresses are designed for people up to 250 lb, and that heavier people sink deeper and need extra support. Mattresses built for bigger bodies, like Big Fig and Titan Plus, publish ratings from 1,000 to 1,200 lb.

Is a firmer mattress better for heavy people?

Usually firmer and more supportive, yes, because a heavier body sinks further into the comfort layers. Brand firmness scales are relative, though: Saatva rates the HD's feel for sleepers 300 to 500 lb and says lighter people will find it firmer. Side sleepers still need enough cushion for shoulders and hips.

What does a per-side weight rating mean?

It's how much each half of the bed is designed to carry. Big Fig's Classic, for example, is designed for 1,100 lb total, or 550 lb per person for couples. Check both numbers: two sleepers can be under the total but one of you over the per-side limit.

Do I need a special bed frame for a heavy-duty mattress?

Often, yes, and it can affect your warranty. Saatva's warranty requires a center-support frame for queen and larger, and WinkBeds requires a rigid base with ample center support legs. See our heavy-duty bed frames guide for options rated 1,250 lb and up.
