Plenty of fat people have had the experience of stepping on a scale and getting an error, or a number that's clearly the scale giving up. Many ordinary bathroom scales top out at 400 lb. If you need a real number, for a medication dose, a doctor's request, tracking fluid, or just because you like data, you need a scale built for it.
This guide isn't about weight loss, and we won't tell you what your number should be. It's about scales that actually read it: high capacity, a platform wide enough for your feet, and a display you can see or hear. Every capacity below comes from the manufacturer or the listing itself.

1Best Overall
My Weigh XL-700 Talking Bathroom Scale, 700 lb
My Weigh · $$
- Key spec
- 700 lb
- Fit
- Scale 19.8 x 11.8 x 2 in; weighing tray 19 x 11.75 in
Rated to 700 lb with 0.2 lb graduation, per My Weigh, which is about as high as personal bathroom scales go. The 19 x 11.75 inch tray is long enough for a wider stance, and the voice readout means you don't have to look down past your belly to see the number. The catch is a 90-day warranty on My Weigh's own warranty page.
Why we like it
- 700 lb capacity with 0.2 lb graduation (per My Weigh)
- Long 19 x 11.75 in tray gives room for wider stances
- Talking readout in 4 languages; voice can be turned off
- Runs on 4 AA batteries (included)
Keep in mind
- Tray is long but only 11.75 in deep
- My Weigh's published warranty is 90 days (retailer claims of a 30-year warranty are unverified)
- Some listings show it as unavailable or sold by third parties
2Best Budget
Health o meter Extra Wide Digital Bathroom Scale, 500 lb Capacity
Health o meter · $
- Fit
- Platform 13.5 x 11.8 in
A plain, inexpensive scale that reads to 500 lb on a 13.5 x 11.8 inch platform, a bit roomier than most budget scales. It remembers four users and the listing cites a 5-year limited warranty. The display sits on the platform, so it's best if you can see your feet when standing.
Why we like it
- 500 lb capacity at a budget price
- Extra-wide 13.5 x 11.8 in platform
- 3.5 x 1.6 in high-contrast LCD; remembers last weigh-in for up to 4 users
- 5-year limited warranty per the listing
Keep in mind
- Display sits on the platform, so it can be hard to see past your belly (no remote display)
- No app or smart features
- Model number not shown on the listing
3Best Everyday-Looking Scale
Escali High Capacity Anti-Slip Digital Bathroom Scale (HC255W), 562 lb
Escali · $$
- Fit
- Approx. 12.8 x 12.2 x 1.18 in (per Kohl's listing)
Looks like any glass bathroom scale but goes to 562 lb, well past the usual 400 lb ceiling. The etched glass top is designed to be slip-resistant, which matters if you weigh in after a shower. The platform is roughly 12 x 13 inches, so it's not extra wide.
Why we like it
- 562 lb capacity in a standard home scale
- Slip-resistant etched tempered glass surface
- Extra-large backlit display that holds the reading for about 10 seconds, per retailer listings
- 0.1 lb increments; lb, kg and stone
Keep in mind
- Platform is roughly 12 x 13 in, not extra-wide
- Display is on the platform (no remote readout)
- Specs beyond capacity come from retailer listings, not an Escali page

Why we like it
- 550 lb capacity at a home-scale price
- Display on an extendable pole adjustable from 23 to 46 in

6Best Remote Display
Health o meter Professional 498KL Remote Display Digital Scale
Health o meter Professional · $$$
- Fit
- Platform 13.75 x 16.5 x 2.4 in; 9 ft remote display cable
A medical-office scale whose display sits on a 9-foot cord: hold it, set it on the counter or mount it on the wall at eye level. The 13.75 x 16.5 inch platform is deeper than most home scales and low enough to need only a small step up. Amazon lists it at 500 lb while Health o meter's current spec sheet says 660 lb, so we're listing the lower figure.
Why we like it
- Remote display you can hold, set on a table or wall-mount
- Deeper 13.75 x 16.5 in low-profile, non-skid platform
- 0.2 lb resolution, BMI, tare and hold functions
- 6 AA batteries included; optional AC adapter; 2-year limited warranty per spec sheet
Keep in mind

How to choose a high-capacity bathroom scale
Capacity is the first filter, but three other things decide whether you'll actually like using it: platform size, how you read the display, and where you put it.
| Scale | Capacity | Platform | Display | Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Health o meter Extra Wide | 500 lb | 13.5 x 11.8 in | On platform | 2 AAA |
| Health o meter 498KL | 500 lb (listing) / 660 lb (spec sheet) | 13.75 x 16.5 in | Remote, 9 ft cord | 6 AA |
| IDEAWORKS talking | 550 lb | 15 x 12 in | On platform + voice | 9V |
| N.A. Health+Wellness | 550 lb | 15 x 13 in | Pole, 23–46 in | Check listing |
| Escali HC255W | 562 lb | About 12 x 13 in | On platform | 4 AAA |
| My Weigh XL-700 | 700 lb | 19 x 11.75 in tray | On platform + voice | 4 AA |
| Detecto bariatric | 1,000 lb | 24 x 24 in | Separate indicator | Check listing |
| Detecto 6856 | 1,000 lb | 24 x 24 in | Separate, with grips | AC adapter |

What capacity do I need?
Many standard home scales stop at 400 lb. Escali's own glass and body-fat models, for example, list 400 lb capacities. Buy a scale rated comfortably above your current weight, so you're never wondering whether a reading is real or the scale maxing out. If you're at 450 lb, a 500 lb scale is cutting it close; a 562 or 700 lb model gives you breathing room.
Platform size: the spec nobody puts on the box
A narrow platform forces your feet together, which is uncomfortable and wobbly. Measure your natural standing stance, heel to heel, and compare it with the platform:
- About 12 x 12 to 13 x 12 inches: typical bathroom scale size, fine if you stand with feet close together.
- 15 inches wide: a noticeable upgrade (the 550 lb IDEAWORKS and North American Health+Wellness models).
- 19-inch tray: lets you stand with feet farther apart side to side (My Weigh XL-700), though it's only 11.75 inches deep.
- 24 x 24 inches: room for any stance (the Detecto bariatric scales).
Can't see the display? Three fixes
If a belly or limited neck movement makes a floor-level display hard to read, you have options. A talking scale (My Weigh, IDEAWORKS) reads it out loud. A raised display on a pole (North American Health+Wellness) brings it up to 46 inches. A remote display on a cord (Health o meter 498KL) can be held in your hand or mounted on the wall. Any of these beats balancing a phone camera between your feet.
Getting an accurate reading
Health o meter's 498KL manual says to place the scale on a flat, level surface and lists an unlevel floor as a cause of questionable readings or a scale that won't zero. In practice:
- Use hard flooring, not carpet or a bath mat.
- Keep the scale in one spot; moving it around changes readings.
- Step on gently and stand centered, weight spread evenly over both feet.
- Weigh at the same time of day, in similar clothing, if you're tracking for a doctor.
Home scale or bariatric scale?
Home scales are cheap and small. Bariatric floor scales, like the Detecto models, are built for clinics: low-profile platforms you barely step up onto, rubber surfaces Detecto describes as skid-proof, and 1,000 lb ratings. They cost far more, but if you need to weigh over 700 lb, need hand grips for balance, or want a scale that will last for years of daily use, they're the right tool.
Warranties vary a lot: My Weigh lists 90 days on its warranty page, Health o meter's spec sheet lists 2 years for the 498KL, and the Health o meter Extra Wide listing cites 5 years. Check before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
What's the highest weight a bathroom scale can measure?
Personal bathroom scales top out around 700 lb; the My Weigh XL-700 is rated to 700 lb. Above that you're into bariatric floor scales like Detecto's, rated to 1,000 lb with 24 x 24 inch platforms.
Why does my scale give different readings each time?
The most common cause is the floor. Health o meter's 498KL manual lists an unlevel floor as a cause of questionable readings and says to move the scale to a level surface and weigh again. Put your scale on hard, flat flooring and keep it in the same spot.
Can I use a bathroom scale on carpet?
It's not a good idea. Manufacturers like Health o meter specify a flat, level surface, and carpet lets the scale tilt or sink unevenly. If your bathroom is carpeted, set the scale on a piece of plywood or a hard tile.
Do I need a medical-grade scale?
Not usually. A home scale rated well above your weight is fine for everyday tracking. Medical-grade scales like the Health o meter 498KL and Detecto models make sense if you need more than 700 lb of capacity, a remote display, hand grips, or a doctor has asked for clinic-style readings.
