Showering sitting down is not giving up; it's just smart. It saves your knees, lets you wash your feet without a balancing act, and makes a slippery tub a lot less sketchy. The problem is that plenty of standard shower chairs carry far lower ratings than the ones here, with seats about the width of a dinner plate.

Every chair and bench here is bariatric, with a published capacity of 500 or 600 lb from the manufacturer. We list seat width and depth for each one, because a chair that holds you but leaves half of you hanging off isn't much of a chair.

How to choose a bariatric shower chair or bench

Start with your bathroom, not the product. Is it a tub or a stall? Do you step over a tub wall, or roll in? Then match capacity and seat size to your body.

What weight capacity do I need?

Lumex rates its 600 lb chairs for weight that's "evenly distributed." Real life isn't always that tidy: you lower yourself down, lean to one side to wash, and push up to stand. Give yourself headroom above your weight, sit down slowly rather than dropping, and avoid putting all your weight on one corner of the seat. If you're close to 500 lb, go for a 600 lb model.

Measure your tub or shower first

  • Inside width of the tub floor. Shower chairs need all four legs flat on the bottom, and tub floors curve up at the sides.
  • Space outside the tub. A transfer bench needs room for its two outer legs on the bathroom floor. Lumex lists 14 to 18 inches of clearance beneath the frame, so it can clear the tub wall.
  • Your seated hip width. Compare it to seat width. A 17-inch seat under 22-inch hips works for some people and not others; a transfer bench gives you up to about 27 inches.
  • Doorways, if you're getting a rolling chair. The Drive NRS185008 is 26 inches wide overall.

Arms, backs and armless benches

Arms give you something to push on when standing, but they also set a hard limit on how wide you can be. A back helps if you tire easily or want to lean while washing your hair. Armless, backless benches are the most flexible for bigger bodies, because nothing presses on your hips, but you'll need a grab bar or a sturdy wall to push off from.

Set it up safely

Drive Medical's owner's manuals give the same core advice across their bariatric chairs:

  1. Set every leg to the same height. The locking clips should go fully through the same hole on each leg. Push down and pull up on each leg to make sure it's locked.
  2. All four rubber tips should touch the floor at once. A rocking chair is a slipping chair.
  3. Check the rubber tips regularly and replace any that are torn, worn or missing.
  4. Sit, don't stand, on the seat, and never use a chair that feels loose.

For transfer benches, Drive's manual says the legs with suction cups go inside the tub and that the bench must be level to avoid damage or injury. Lumex's back reverses for left- or right-hand tubs; set it before your first shower, not while you're wet.

Make seated showers easier

A seated shower works much better with a handheld shower head on a long hose, like Drive's 80-inch model, so you can rinse your back and feet without twisting. A long-handled sponge or back scrubber helps with reach; see our reachers and dressing aids guide. Then wrap up in something big enough: our oversized bath sheets and robes go up to 84 inches long and 10XL.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a shower chair and a tub transfer bench?

A shower chair sits entirely inside the tub or stall. A transfer bench straddles the tub wall, with two legs inside and two outside, so you sit down outside the tub and slide across instead of stepping over the edge. If climbing into your tub is the hard part, get a transfer bench.

How wide should a bariatric shower chair be?

Measure your seated hip width and compare it with the seat width, not the overall chair width. The chairs here range from 16.5 to 22 inches across, and transfer benches run about 26.5 to 26.75 inches. Remember that inside a tub the walls limit how wide a chair can be.

Can I use a shower chair in a bathtub?

Yes, if it fits flat on the tub floor with all four rubber tips touching. Tub floors are curved and narrow, so check the chair's overall footprint against the flat part of your tub. If it doesn't fit, a transfer bench is often the better choice.

How often should I replace the rubber tips?

Check them regularly. Drive Medical's manuals say to inspect the tips for rips, wear or missing pieces and replace them immediately, and its warranty treats tips as parts that need periodic replacement. Worn tips are one of the easiest ways for a chair to slip.
