Low sugar does not have to mean low joy. Whether you are keeping an eye on sugar for diabetes, because your dentist asked, or just because you prefer snacks that are not super sweet, there are genuinely tasty options that list 0 to 2 g of sugar per serving.

We built this list from brand labels and product pages, and we focused on taste categories people actually crave: chocolate, candy, chips and something salty and savory. Nothing here is a weight-loss product and none of it is medical advice. If you are managing a condition like diabetes, check with your doctor or a registered dietitian about what fits your plan.

How to read sugar on a label

The US Nutrition Facts label shows Total Sugars and, indented under it, Includes X g Added Sugars. According to the FDA, total sugars include naturally occurring sugar, like the lactose in milk, plus any added sugar. The Daily Value for added sugars is 50 g per day on a 2,000-calorie diet; there is no Daily Value for total sugars.

That distinction explains some surprises. fairlife Core Power shakes list 5 to 7 g of total sugar but 0 g added, because that sugar comes from milk. If your care plan cares about total sugar, use the top number; if it is about added sugar, the indented line is the one to watch.

Sweet snacks: what is doing the sweetening?

To get sweetness without sugar, brands use two kinds of ingredients:

  • Sugar alcohols like erythritol and isomalt add bulk and sweetness. Lily's peanut butter cups list 7 g per serving. Some people tolerate them fine; others get gas or an upset stomach.
  • High-intensity sweeteners like stevia and sucralose are used in tiny amounts. Some people notice a cooling or slightly bitter aftertaste.

If one brand does not agree with you, try another that uses a different sweetener, or go savory.

Savory snacks: the easy route

The simplest low-sugar snacks are the ones that were never sweet to begin with: cheese crisps, meat sticks, nuts and seasoned tuna. Watch for glazes and flavors with honey, teriyaki, BBQ or maple in the name, since those usually add sugar. StarKist is a good example: the BOLD Hot Buffalo pouch lists 0 g of sugar, but the lineup also includes Honey BBQ and Sweet & Spicy, so check the label on the specific flavor.

Diabetes and other health needs

Sugar is only one part of the picture. Total carbohydrates, fiber, protein, fat and how much you eat at once all play a role, and the right approach is personal. If you manage diabetes or prediabetes, your doctor or a registered dietitian can help you decide which of these snacks fit, how carbs from sugar alcohols should count for you and how to time snacks around medication. And if you track your blood pressure at home, salty savory snacks are worth a look on the sodium line too; our blood pressure monitors with large cuffs guide covers getting accurate readings.

Stocking up

Most of these come in multipacks or bags that keep for months, which makes them easy to buy in bulk. For a protein-forward stash, see our best high-protein snacks; for boxes that mix lots of flavors for an office or household, see snack variety packs and boxes.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a low-sugar snack?

There is no single official cutoff for a snack. In this guide we picked foods listing 0 to 2 g of sugar per serving. Read the Nutrition Facts label for total sugars and the line that shows how many of those are added sugars.

Are sugar-free snacks safe for people with diabetes?

Many people with diabetes eat low-sugar snacks, but carbohydrates, sugar alcohols and portion sizes all matter, and needs vary from person to person. Check with your doctor or a registered dietitian about which snacks fit your plan.

Why do some low-sugar snacks upset my stomach?

Many use sugar alcohols such as erythritol or isomalt. Some people find these cause gas or digestive discomfort, especially in larger amounts. Try a single serving first, or choose savory snacks that need no sweeteners.

What does net carbs mean on a label?

Net carbs is a brand calculation, not a line on the official Nutrition Facts panel. Lily's, for example, subtracts fiber and erythritol from total carbohydrates. Use the official total carbohydrate number if your care plan is based on it.
